Which of these systems would be better, for someone who never used linux before? It's going to be installed on multimedia PC, that my parents mainly use.

Spec:
AMD 640 athlon quad
DDR2 4GB 800mhz ram
Intergrated graphics
WD Blue 500GB

Seeing as 14.04 LTS came out yesterday I'd personally wait a couple of weeks for Mint 17 to come out, and use that. The Cinnamon DE only uses about 380MB of RAM on boot. My system is very similar to your parents' but I only have a dual core CPU and identical RAM. Cinnamon runs perfectly well and Mint is better laid out (and has better tools) than *buntu imho.

I don't like mint (I've tested out mint 15), debian is another system which wasn't what I was looking for.

Currently testing out Ubuntu GNOME 13.10, I like it so far.

You do know that Ubuntu is based on Debian?

For what it's worth, I second trying Mint. It's a straight forward and easy to use distro and Cinnamon is excellent.

Mint is *buntu with the Cinnamon desktop environment on top and some pre-installed tools and codecs. You'd get the exact same result installing Gnome 3 on Mint. Just in case you weren't aware. ;)
