Hi all

I have the linux live cd, now what do I do? lol

It brings up this black screen asks me for a login of some sort?

Which Live CD are you using? 5.04,5.10 were pritty much the same, whereas 6.06 is somewhat different.

If its just a black screen with 'login:" it means Xorg didn't load properly. Login in with root, there should be no password.
Type:

# telinit 5

If that does nothing, make a copy of Xorg.conf to something like a floppy disc or USB drive and paste here.

sorry for not replying guys

right the version is (download name) Ubuntu 6.10 desktop i386. so 6.10 it is and i notice that it says fail for 1 of the items, gimme a sec ill check again now.

the startx command worked, thanks :D

but mozilla firefox didn't work  but thats ok, I'm considering a dual boot now, Linux looks kool :D

You would need to set up the networking, unless your home connection/network was DHCP? Basically, use the same network settings you use for your Windows connection.

Off the top of my head:

System>Administration>Networking

Find eth0 (if you are running ethernet) and change the settings accordingly :)

Which is why I asked if it's wired or wireless. If you're looking for wireless support you'll need to install drivers. It isn't worth the effort to try to do that on a Live system. It's a project to undertake if you decide to install it to the hard disk.
