Which Live CD are you using? 5.04,5.10 were pritty much the same, whereas 6.06 is somewhat different.
If its just a black screen with 'login:" it means Xorg didn't load properly. Login in with root, there should be no password.
Type:
# telinit 5
If that does nothing, make a copy of Xorg.conf to something like a floppy disc or USB drive and paste here.

and /var/log/Xorg.0.log more importantly.
Which distribution's live CD do you have? There are loads of distros and most have a live version.

This means you're logged in as the root (administrator) user. Try entering
startx
then press enter.

You would need to set up the networking, unless your home connection/network was DHCP? Basically, use the same network settings you use for your Windows connection.kirbz said:

Find eth0 (if you are running ethernet) and change the settings accordingly
Which is why I asked if it's wired or wireless. If you're looking for wireless support you'll need to install drivers. It isn't worth the effort to try to do that on a Live system. It's a project to undertake if you decide to install it to the hard disk.kirbz said:
