I need to send some discs to my brother to get his PC working again.
The PC has an Epox 9NDA3+ S939 board, nVidia Geforce 7600GS AGP card and an Audigy sound card.

I can't seem to find Ubuntu drivers for the board so what are the chances that the board will work with a basic install? He has very limited/no access to the net for updates so everything has to come on disc.

Any ideas?

I've got an MSI S939 board with almost the same spec (SBLive audio card and nVidia 6800GT AGP card). Could I install Ubuntu onto the machine here, install all the updates and just send him the HDD to plug in. Would that work?

I've never come across any problems with chipset drivers (even on old PII rigs), try it in a Live CD first though.

What CPU and RAM have they got in there?

People are very mislead by Linux, thinking it's Windows and needs drivers for everything. :)

Everything will work out of the box, the only thing which won't is 3D graphics, as that needs to be installed through the restricted drivers panel, but regular 2D will work perfectly straight outta the box.

Try a Live CD and you will get your answer to whether it will work or not :)

I have ubuntu on an old laptop (4 years old or so) with no issues.

He's running a version of Ubuntu at the moment and his main issue is the graphics (I've not seen the problem so can't describe it), but I I guess it needs the update you mention.

I'll try the live CD as mentioned!

I'm guessing the 7600GS will use the same drivers as my 7600GT that i use on my Linux box.

Never had any problem, Ubuntu is fairly straightforward when it comes to installing 'restricted drivers'

I did notice when i changed them that the splash screen on startup, the resolution changed to something like 800x600 which looked unsightly but this is a known issue. I just ended up removing it.
