I sound like a complete noob asking this since im a windows and mac user. I have installed ubuntu virtually and It asks for login I put it in then it sits there. :( How do I get into the desktop :(:(:( I wish i never had to ask :(

quite surprised it booted to the command prompt.

ubuntu usually always loads up gdm on boot.

what version did u install, and did u set any options during install that would boot to the command prompt?

Not being a smart a***, in fact I'm a very green Linux newbie and often read these threads for tips and pointers, the only reason I knew this was I had the same problem.

I was using Windows VMWare and downloaded a VM iso of Ubuntu 10.4 to install. The lazy mans way of doing it. :( On starting the VM Ubuntu 10.4 it would always load as far as far as the command prompt. To get to desktop you had to type the command startx, which I believe starts the GUI. I eventually got round it by altering Grub in Terminal but cannot remember how.... Dohhh :(

If I'm talking rubbish... please correct me... many thanks
