Hey,

So I just switched to Ubuntu (still have XP installed) and im thinking of switching for good as I decided to leave games behind...

However, the only thing holding me back is the soundcard not working, i've had a look around and found this:

http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/downloads/download.asp?MainCategory=209&nRegionFK=&nCountryFK=&nLanguageFK=&sOSName=Linux&region=3&Product_Name=X-Fi+Fatal1ty&Product_ID=14000&modelnumber=&driverlang=1033&OS=12&select=0&x=34&y=13

As this is my first real try to switch i'm a little confused as how to install it, any help would be great.

Couple more things...

I could do with some suggestions on:

ftp tool
irc chat tool (cant stand pidgin...)
torrent program

I'm trying to install ventrilo as im typing this... wish me luck... :p

any help is appreciated!

Wrong forum so guessing the mods will move this soon, but to try to help:

Not sure about installing the driver it will probably come with a readme/install file with instructions though, but try to search for specific help for ubuntu, ubuntu has a package manager called apt-get which is the easiest way to install things like programs and drivers, if the program/driver is in the repository.

ftp tool, I use ncftp from the command line, or FireFTP in firefox, so can't really help other than those (ncftp rocks though :p)

IRC there is program called X-Chat, and should be in apt-get, you'll need to find out the specific package name, or search in the Synaptic Package Manager (available from the administration menu assuming they've not changed it)

Torrent Program, I use Azureus which works nicely, there are a few others like uTorrent but not got any experience of them, again for Ubuntu you'll need to find the exact package name.

xfi dont support any of their drivers on linux Yet but they are trying
Bah, no they're not. Every couple of years they come out with another press release about how they're committed to Linux support and how they'll be releasing drivers soon, but they never arrive.

Heck, Creative can't even support Windows properly.

For FTP I use gFTP as it's simple and easy and it gets the job done. You could also use Filezilla if that's to your liking. If you wanted to you could also use wget or curl from the command line.

For torrents the best client I've used is rtorrent, but it's CLI-only. It's performance is fantastic though. It's great to keep running in a screen session and check up on it using ssh while you're out and about.

For GUI clients Transmission is pretty good, but I still think µTorrent in WINE is the best (only on i*86 Linux)
