Aghhhhh help me :D

I can't get xbmc to run on ubuntu:(

If i un-install my onboard graphics drivers it runs but slower than a slow thing going slow.

With the drivers installed (version173) i get the following error message - XBMC needs hardware accelerated OpenGL rendering Install an appropriate driver.

And ideas guys?

D'oh i forgot to restart for the updates to complete.

Its still running slowly though :(

Would this b down the just using the on board graphics?

open update manager, click settings, click 'other settings' then click add and cut'n'paste the ppa line.

also after you've tried to install the nvidia drivers in a console run this.
Code:
glxinfo|head
you should see something like this
lee@sakura:~$ glxinfo|head
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4
server glx extensions:
GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_SGIX_fbconfig,
GLX_SGIX_pbuffer, GLX_SGI_video_sync, GLX_SGI_swap_control,
GLX_EXT_swap_control, GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap, GLX_ARB_create_context,
GLX_ARB_create_context_profile, GLX_EXT_create_context_es2_profile,

if you don't see nvidia in there then the drivers aren't installed properly.

how much graphics memory have you got? do you have an option on the bios to allocate system memory for use on the graphics card?

Newer drivers should make it a bit quicker but 173 isnt really that old so I doubt it would make a massive difference.

I would pickup a 8400gs for <£30 if i were you.. these cards fly in XBMC and would also allow you to use hardware assisted hd video accelleration via VDPAU.

if XBMC says that, then you need to install the correct drivers. On that card you probably need the 'legacy' drivers from nvidia.

There is no need for updated drivers use the one's from ubuntu's repo especially on an old card like that.
