Why not just use FreeBSD and the DE of your choice?, In retrospect the only reason I swayed away from FreeBSD towards Linux was the lack of Flash & Nvidia drivers, never had any issues with FreeBSD's package management.

I never found the BSD systems unfriendly at all. I used OpenBSD from time to time and really enjoyed it. I'll probably install FreeBSD in a virtual machine and play around with that as well.
