UCAS points question

Hi all,

Basically, at the moment I'm doing AS Levels at my 6th form, but they aren't going too well. I hate the place, don't like the teachers that much really, I don't seem to learn too much and have no motivation to try hard. So obviously this isn't going to end up with my getting good results.

So I've decided I want to redo my AS Levels at a college next year, which I know will be much better.

My question is though, is it worth me still doing my exams? The first one is only around 6 weeks away.

One of my friends said that his brother faced a similar situation, and he said that if I do my exams, but go to college next year to redo my AS Levels, then I wouldn't be able to use the points gained this year, therefore meaning there would be no point doing these exams.

Is this true? So instead of going to 6th form for the next 6-8 weeks or so, I could do something like getting a job to earn a bit of money? Or will I still be able to use those points, making it worthwhile to stay for my exams?

Thanks for any help :)

I think it depends if you're intending to study the same subjects next year as you are this year. If you're doing different subjects then of course you might as well carry on and pick up whichever grades you can, as they'll count entirely separately from your results next year. If you're doing the same subjects again then any better grades you get next year will stand in place of this year's grades... you can't use two lots of points from the same qualification, so it'd just be like resitting it at your current school.

If I were you I'd stick it out... it's only six weeks, and the grades will give you something to fall back on if things don't go as expected next year.

ask a member of staff at your college, they know best, and it's what they're there for.

If I was you I'd pull my finger out and try pass the exams. Do you really want to waste a year of your life?

Anyway if you're retaking the same subjects and you're VERY confident you'll do much better then I would leave it.

Is this true?

I don't think it is. A grade is worth points basically. Some universities won't accept points from similar subjects though. For example if you do a BTEC ICT course and an A-level ICT course, the course that you got the most points from counts.

Well, I'm going to only be doing one of the same subjects, and I am confident that I will be doing better as this year I've been an idiot tbh, and not done all of the work, not listened properly etc. I'm definately not going to do it again.

Dont be a fool and throw it away. Wanna stack shelves for a living? If you can't battle it out now, you never will.
6 weeks is more than enough time. As long as you WANT to succeed: you will. Apply yourself and work hard and you'll be rewarded.

Best of luck.

A lot of unis only accept one AS level anyway, so it might be pointless.

Good point.

The OP has a few choices:

- Put in a lot of effort and pass all the exams (doable in 6 week)
- Put all your effort into passing one exam which you won't retake next year (use this as your one AS) then do the retakes
- Do absolutely nothing and waste a year

By the way you should find out the minimum hours you need to be at your new college to be considered a full-time student. If you do decide to put effort into one AS, you may only want to take 3 AS subjects again because more than that can be a big work load at A2. They normally ask you to take 4 AS subjects so there might be an issue. You can just put no effort into one of your choices. I just thought I'd let you know.
