Is there a review somewhere that shows the increase in quality from the Gigabyte UD3R, the Ud4, the UD4P and the UD5? Oh and the EXTREME.

I really don't know which one is worth getting :(

Just get the UD3R.... I doubt theres too much point spending the extra money unless you want 12GB of RAM straight away. By the time you need that much 4GB sticks will probably be standard anyway.

The UD5 also has more PCI-E (3 vs 2) more SATA (10 vs 8) it has eSATA (2 vs 0) dual LAN and better cooling, so theres more than just the 6 DIMMs vs 4 DIMMs

So unless you need 3 graphics cards, 10 internal hard drives, 2 more external drives, a 2Gb teamed LAN connection and some flashy heatsinks... I'd say go for the UD3R!

:P

The esata thing is annoying, it seems to get esata capability i have to spend more than i wanted to. You would think it would come as standard by now really. I am having to go for the ud5 just to get esata!

unless anyone knows of another mobo not to ovc or multi gfx but just for extra sata and esata use?

I just bought the UD-5 (last week) and I must say I'm very pleased with it, although I must admit I do go through SATA ports like nobody else. By the time you have a couple of RAID0 arrays in there plus a couple of other eSATA devices (a DVD and a Blu-ray writer/player), then a couple more eSATA external drives, you are starting to need all those ports. However I'm a photographer and really need all those disks and esata external backup drives, maybe if you are just into gaming and a bit of office work, then the number of ports available is overkill.

Also I immediately went to 12Gb RAM, you can never have enough of that working with the 64-bit version of Photoshop. :D

I got the UD3R the other week as i saw no point in the extra features. Its great and overclocks fine. You are only really paying for more slots or features that arent neccesarily for everyone.

Same prob. so this sounds like the best option for a lot of storage?

This is more response than I expected - thanks for that.
Now I think it all boils down to one question for me: are the extra overclocking capabilities of the UD-5 worth the additional £65?
Let's hope not :P

It certainly was for me Ally - I have just one SATA connection free now out of the 10 (but I have one eSATA port unused on the top of my case, but no doubt I will find something to plug into there shortly ). If you go for a mobo with only 6 or 8 connectors, by the time you have splashed out for a PCI SATA card, you might as well have purchased the better motherboard.

Thanks for that, sounds like we have similar requirements, can i ask what else you went for component wise and the case you chose?

still weighing up my options at the moment but tempted to go i7, silverstone fortress case. I want to get the smallest case i can without compromising the cooling for the drives, not a gamer so no issues with gfx cards. Thanks. :)
