Hi folks

I'm in the market for a new TV. Interested to hear your thoughts/pros & cons on my shortlist below.

  • I'm not that fussed by 4K or 3D.
  • I'll be using it mostly for Freeview HD, gaming, sports, and streaming.
  • Ideal size 40" - 43"
  • Budget £400-£550 ish

I've done a fair amount of research, and I've read good and bad things about each. I can't seem to find the perfect one for me, and I still can't make my mind up. Some things I've picked up on:

Sony - slow and buggie Android OS.
Samsung - lip sync problems.
Panasonic - 4k and most expensive.

SONY BRAVIA KDL43W805CBU

SAMSUNG UE40H6400

PANASONIC VIERA TX40CX680B

Be good to hear from any owners of the above.

If you have other suggestions feel free to add.

Thanks!

Without a doubt its got to be the H6400 even if your not going to be using the 3D function. You will find you will use it. Even if you don't use it much cause the TV for the price is excellent. Having the 3D will give you a better pic for HD films overall. The lip sinc issue on the H6400 was resolved on a update quite a while ago

Not why you should think the Sony KDL 43W805CBU is slow ?

I have the Sony KDL-42W706B and its the best T.V ive had for HD , gaming, sports no blur

The Sony Android TV line is awful, avoid. Sony's implementation of it is atrocious, and although I imagine they'll probably eventually sort out most of the bugs they'll never fixed the performance issues because the hardware it's running on is hopeless.

My Sony KDL-42W706B is mint and got good reviews by HDTV Test

Still exists, albeit rare occasion. Have had netflix lipsynch issues and freeview tv recorded onto my hard drive lipsync issues. But like i said only on rare occasion. It happens maybe 5% so 95% of the time everything is fine :) I think i just restarted netflix and switched tv/hdd off and on to fix it.

Havent had any lipsynch problems recently though (2016)

Fair enough; I had two KDL-50W805Cs and they were both awful. The first had terrible backlight clouding, the second one started making a clicking noise after it turned on, and both had plenty of bugs, missing features and annoying issues.

I'd hope their 2016 models are built with Android TV in mind from the start instead of being slapped on top of their existing Sony TV software because that's clearly where the bulk of the problems lie. You press a button on the remote and you're never sure if you're going to get an Android-style interface or the only clunky Sony one. It's a real mess and not what I expected from a premium product at all.

I only bought the Samsung 40" about three weeks ago - I absolutely love it. Best TV I've ever own (albeit the first "smart" TV I've owned). Does everything I need; it's fast and the picture quality is stunning. It even has a smart remote you can control like a Wii remote! Very impressed :)

Here's my thread where I was recommended to go for the Samsung: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18712972

Let me know if you have any questions about the TV :)

I have the 40" H6400 in the playroom and it is a very good set. I also have the CX680 but in the 50" version and it is exceptional. You will not be disappointed with either.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

The Samsung's ahead right now, but I'm not that keen on the stand - maybe it'll grow on me.

The stand on the Sony however is pretty slick.

On another note, I can't seem to find the Sony Bravia KDL42W705 anywhere, but I have found the KDL40W705C. Apart from being smaller are there any major changes to the spec?

**update**

Found a KDL42W705 on the Argos eBay outlet: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-KDL4...-Freeview-HD-Smart-LED-TV-Black-/331761639967 at £379.99
The cheapest I've found the UE40H6400 is for £339.99

The H6400 is a fantastic TV, get it.

The stand does make you go hmmm at first if you're used to flat stands, but once you get used to it then it's actually really nice.

Just took the plunge after about 7-8 hours of reading on the Internet on the 6400 40"... £339 seemed a good price too!

Nice smr! I still haven't made my purchase yet - had a few things to shell out for this month. You'll have to let me know how you get on with it.

I think I'll go for the 40" H6400 too, although I still get waves of doubt when l look at the Sony Bravia KDL40W705C - I'm a terrible ditherer.

I'm terrible for dithering too lol - spent ages umming and arring over it last night. But a few things swayed it for me - all the comments I'd seen on these forums, the review ratings and individual reviews across a spectrum of other websites, and really the icing on the cake was which magazines assesment where the 32 and 40" versions are the highest scoring in their respective screen sizes. Which gave the Sony 62% score but they gave the Samsung 79%.

I would paste the reviews here but I don't think that's allowed.

Update:

Just purchased the Samsung UE40H6400 from John Lewis for £399 with 5 year guarantee.

I dithered for a while about getting the UE40JU6400 4K model, but couldn't really justify another £100 for 4K viewing that I'll use once in a blue moon.

The H6400 is£50 cheaper elsewhere but I wanted the peace of mind with the guarantee and JL customer service.

Arrives next week, I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks for helping me make my mind up.
