UEFA Champions/Europa League Draw 30/31 Aug

Great group for United. City have a tricky group but I wouldn't be surprised if that gives Mancini some ammunition for a deadline day marquee signing.

United group last year was very easy on paper but I don't know how many people watched our games, both Basel and Benfica played very well and were much better than I ever imagined they would be. Hopefully we won't have a repeat showing again this year.

Iniesta player of the tournament, played almost every minute, 18 shots, no goals, 1 assist.

Fabregas, 3 starts, 3 sub appearances, 9 shots 2 goals, 1 assist. Iniesta went on LOADS of runs with the ball down the left, ignored passes, passed inside the box almost exclusively when he couldn't shoot though he prefered to shoot and miss most of the time instead, basically none of those passes went close to anyone. He consistently held onto the ball when it was the worst option, he was selfish, his passing in terms of creating proper chances was poor.

Iniesta was one of the poorer players on the pitch for Spain, he however had maybe more of the ball than anyone else, and did almost nothing with it. People are quite easily blinded by time on the ball and fancy dazling runs, unfortunately Gervinho does runs holding onto the ball with no final product.

Fabregas has an assist, two game winning, in three international finals in a row. Iniesta.... does not. Fabregas outscored and outassisted Iniesta across the three cups despite playing significantly less minutes. He was way better at the first Euro's, better at this Euro's and only being randomly used as only a sub in the world cup let Iniesta get two goals to Fabregas's one assist, which gave Iniesta his winning goal in a game he'd been almost completely useless in to that point by the way. 6 starts and playing more than almost everyone else, 2 goals, one setup by Fabregas, Fab, 4 sub appearances, one in the final, got the assist for the winning goal.

Iniesta IS over rated, watch some of the footage of this Euro's, Iniesta was mostly selfish and ineffective.

I don't think Iniesta is overrated by most people. He is one of the best players in the world but to compare him to Messi and Ronaldo is a little silly. Sometimes I feel like certain players become fashionable when there is an over-dominance of a sport by a few players. Like they see something that no one else does.

To be fair he didn't compare Iniesta to those two but did put him third behind him, that is over rating him.

HIs performances in all three tournaments boiled down to 2-3 decent games and a crucial goal, Fabregas was brilliant in every single game he played in at all three tournaments. For some reason he was unfashionable at the World cup but was still brilliant when he came on and again got the winning assist.

But this ties it up for me, his highest assisting year in La liga ever was 9, his highest scoring season in the league is 6... Fabregas got 9 goals and 8 assists in his first season, missing the first few games, still struggling with injury and playing in multiple positions. Iniesta got 2 goals and 9 assists last year in the league, he hasn't had a "big" year in both goals and assists and he's primarily used as a very attacking player with little defensive responsibility. Xavi has outscored and out assisted him despite being vastly more involved defensively, playing deeper, having less shots.

Xavi has 10 league goals in his best year and 20 league assists, way way better than Iniesta. Best season Iniesta managed 12 goals/12 assists for club and country in every competition, Xavi 16 goals/34 assists, Fabregas probably 23 goals/19 assists, he got 17 goals/11 assists last season(again his first one, still struggling with injury, with a new team), 13 goals/24 assists in another, he's had multiple seasons well above Iniesta's best.

Xavi and Iniesta have year after year been significantly ahead of Iniesta, in fact by a country mile in goals and assists. The majority of Iniesta's seasons are sub 10 goals and 10 assists, the majority of Fabregas he's been above 10 goals and 10 assists, Xavi;s average in assists in the past 5 years is incredible.

Iniesta isn't anywhere near being as good as those two, he has great great close control skill, but for me while he's no where near as bad as Gervinho, he has that same fatal flaw, he runs into dead ends, screws up the final pass, and basically hogs the ball when he shouldn't.

Our group dates are out:

Wednesday September 19 - Juventus (h)

Tuesday October 2 - FC Nordsjælland (a)

Tuesday October 23 - Shakhtar Donetsk (a)

Wednesday November 7 - Shakhtar Donetsk (h)

Tuesday November 20 - Juventus (a)

Wednesday December 5 - FC Nordsjælland (h)

I happy with that order of games.

5 days after City play away to Real, they host Arsenal.
4 days after they're home to Real, they go to Chelsea.
4 days after they're away to Dortmund, they host United.

Apparently. :D

Yet Fergie will probably still whine and call it an anti-united conspiracy :p

When is the rest of the draw being made for the Champions League, I didn't see who was in Liverpool's group

Draw looks very interesting. Group A looks pretty open, B looks like a nice opportunity for Arsenal to come first, group C could also be interesting with Milan losing Silva and Ibra their best players, Group D will be very exciting, group E looks good for Chelsea and Juventus to come out on top, group F looks nice and simple for Bayern and Lille wont be the same without Hazard, group G will be exciting to see Barca go against Celtic, and finally group H United look likely to cruise through in first place.

Very pleased Arsenal got a pretty easy group...should be an easy group to win in all honesty.

Bookmarked ;)

I'm not one of those to say "oh any group is a hard group at this level" HOWEVER I think Arsenal topping the group with ease isn't a forgone conclusion. Schalke impressed me a lot at the start of last season and they get a big support at home. Montpellier aren't really a big name but they are reigning champions above the likes of Lyon and PSG. Olympiacos you'd expect to brush aside of course but again not the easiest place to go and we got dicked 3-1 there last season. Yes we put out a weakened side but if they were such pushovers the reserves should still have walked it.

Not sure, I think these must have been Europa League groups because there were non-Champions like Manchester United in there.

Of course it isn't, that's why I also said a few posts before that it all depends on which Arsenal turn up.
Montpellier since losing Giroud are having a bad start to their season, think they haven't won a game yet iirc.

But compared to some of the other groups, we have it pretty easy. I'm trying to be a bit more optimistic this season lol

Juve vs Chelsea
Man City vs Real Madrid
PSG vs Porto
Bayern vs Valencia

Those are the games I really want to see from the group stages, I hope none of them clash.

I can see Chelsea or Juve and one of City/Madrid getting knocked out in the group stages as well.

Juve are hard to predict, by historic reputation you'd expect them to be good but they've been out for a while so could struggle. Shakhtar are pretty good and now experienced campaigners in the CL. Not such a straightforward group as some seem to think.

I think I might be inclined to predict Zenit ahead of Milan to win group C
