UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [14th - 16th March 2023]

That VAR call was a joke, who in their right mind needs multiple minutes to then get the ref to call it.
Trent needs dropping for a few games, he's been a liability this season, reckless tackling back needlessly, missing passes and not carrying the confidence of the previous few seasons.
It's bad when you think the keeper had the best game out of the team.

Honestly don't understand what the point of playing the first team was tonight after that performance.

We didn't take any risks, we didn't try and throw men forward chasing a goal yet we still looked like absolute clowns at the back.

Alisson kept that from being another cricket score, Milner's 52 and put in more effort than most of his teammates, Gakpo tried his best and ran his ass off and Nunez looked like the only player who might create something until the braindead decision to take him off.

Everyone else can literally **** off, none more so than Trent who clearly retired from football this season without telling the club.

Performance that sums up our season, all huff no puff with Ali being the world's best keeper and conceding a goal through the cb's both switching off (happened far too often this season regardless of who is there). Bizarre subs from Klopp as usual. Oh well, onto the next game

Trent just needs competition I think. Who has he got pushing him for his spot? Hasn't he had the run of the mill for 5 years?
Didn't know we had Carra using the forum :D

We already bought a young, talented Rb to compete in Ramsey, he's just injured (shocker). What established Rb is going to come in as backup getting the odd game? The positional issues we have with both fullbacks (yes both) stem from the midfield and lack of defensive coverage - it was the same last night as highlighted by Ferdinand when he was trying to show Trent out of position, funnily enough the clip he used showed Robbo was the exactly the same, the same Robbo that gets a free pass though as the media narrative is focused on Trent. Yes he had a bad game going forward by in large, but he was still one of our better players offensively, which was another issue with last night's 'performance'. We've struggled defensively with the amount of free space that's exploited by opposing teams playing the usual 4-3-3, but switching to a 4-2-3-1 with Fabinho and Milner was a stupid game plan, having Gakpo (who again had a bad game, what's that maybe 3 decent games from 15?) drop in and be the link between midfield and attack didn't work at all. Less said about the subs made the better, utterly killed any sort of attacking momentum we had.

The remaining 12 league games are going to be bumpy as ****, but we've just got to hope that Spurs, Newcastle and Brighton are a little worse consistently than us.

Nah, he needs someone like a younger Henderson who would cover his ass if Klopp wants to keep playing the same way.

He's not going to get much better at defending.

I think some Liverpool fans are overreacting by saying they need like four good players (two defenders and two midfielders) to compete at the top again. I'm seeing people wanting VVD replaced now...

Trent hasn't had to defend for 5 years. I think Liverpool fans have forgotten how dominant they were in almost every game they used to play and how little defending their defenders had to do. TAA and Robertsons primary role during Liverpools peak years to was to attack and generate chances, not defend. Hes never been a good defender. Hits a mean cross though.

This is just being exposed by the fact hes having to defend now.

I dont want VVD replaced but I do think we need 4 players, my list of wants for the summer would be 1 x CB , 2 x midfielders, 1 x Right sided forward. All of that should be achievable with a decent spending kitty, however I dont think that Klopp will get that decent spending kitty and that in itself will be interesting to see. I do wonder if he will walk if he feels that he isnt getting the required financial backing this summer.

Agree with this. A huge amount of our difficulty this season has come from the reshuffle up front, and Hendo aging, meaning that we've pressed less well and less high up the pitch, which is giving teams time to pick passes and affect our defence, and also means that we've lost the main way in which we used to create chances.

I think that's led to a massive downturn in form of otherwise good players, particularly VVD and Fabinho, and has made it much easier for teams to target Trent.

Replacing Hendo is a must to cover that space. I think the front three are coming on, and I've been massively impressed with Gakpo.

Two good midfielders (a young Hendo and a young Fabinho) in the summer and I'll be happy enough.

Right, proper football on tonight. None of this namby pamby Champions League. Ten Hag has gone for a strong lineup and Maguire to balance things out. I assume he is hoping to get an early goal or two and put the game to bed then rest players.
