UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [25th - 27th October 2022]

I'm a Liverpool fan. Why would I defend him. I just don't think he deserves all the flame

So, tell us all why you think Ronaldo doesn't deserve the flack?

Just this season:

Has been awful whenever he has played
Didn't do pre-season with the club
Tried to move in the summer
Refused to come on against Spurs and very publicly made a show of walking down the pitch and down the tunnel a few minutes before the end. Not only that, in a game where the whole team had played really and displayed brilliant team spirit and work for each other. He knew that he would be what everyone was talking about instead of the team and thats exactly why he did it. He could have waited 5 minutes. 5 ******* minutes to avoid it but he didn't.

So, again, why doesn't he deserve the flak for behaving like an entitled ****?

PSV have done a good job on us tonight. I never fancied this game much tbh.

Luckily, the last game next week is the easiest of the lot.
Was always going to be our toughest game. Top spot is still easily attainable so not too concerned with the result. The drop off in quality when Nketiah and Lakonga play is quite alarming though, Nketiah especially has been useless.

Because he's always been an entitled **** and you knew this when you signed him presumably.

I'm inclined to give Ronaldo a little slack personally as he had a pretty horrific experience earlier in the year and it's clearly affected him mentally.

I don't think it's possible to push yourself so hard to excel for so many years, and then just smile and settle for being on the bench. You don't achieve what he has with that attitude.

He does need to act better and reign in his frustration but doesn't deserve the hate bandwagon, he doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. He hasn't lost his ability in one season. He will bang in a lot more goals.

If Ronaldo was on form he could have had a hatrick last night. He was marginally offside for one and he missed a lovely chance hitting it over the bar. Both missed were nothing to do with pace or work ethic. He is just rusty as hell.

I am hoping at least he now has a little hunger back in him and has taken it personally.

Which goes against what most of teammates past present have said about him

I am not his biggest fan by any means, recently he has been bit of a dick but to say he has always been entitled isn't accurate.

I can think of very few players I have heard ex-teammates complain about let alone current ones. I have heard plenty of stories about plenty of players off the pitch that make them sound like complete ******** though. Being fantastically wealthy and having half a billion people following you on social media probably gives you a hint of an ego.

You don't have to smile and settle for being on the bench but you do have to display basic professionalism. He has refused to come on a few times since he has been here. He has very openly questioned the manager and thrown his toys out of the pram as well.

I don't understand this argument that the very best performers are entitled to act like ***** when things don't go their way or that its understandable. I could understand him being annoyed at his teammates if they were the issue most of the time but they aren't. He is the one hamstringing the team. He is the one missing chances he should put away.

Hes just a classic example of someone who is fine when everything is going his way and the world revolves around him but as soon as it doesn't his true colours show. If he had any respect for his teammates, his club or his manager he wouldn't be behaving like this.

There is a reason very few tears will be shed when he leaves. If he had come back and it hadn't worked out but he had kept his head up and behaved himself he would have been universally praised.

Well I'm in the other camp. I think it was disrespectful to ask him to come on for a couple of minutes in a game where he clearly wouldnt make a difference. Maybe you are young and yet to understand the human condition in as much depth as myself but you have to take into account his history and the fact that although highly focused to football and image, we are all just human at the end of the day.

Not really as simple as you are making out. Players like him might need a bit of extra focus and nurturing but as a result he will pay you back 10 fold. He might be in the last few years of his career but he still has a lot to give.

Ill assume that you are a fan of Ferguson correct? Being a man u fan and all that. Do you think Ferguson would have done that to him? Regardless of what you think, a player like him needs special treatment and it's the managers job to recognise this and do it.

Also... I have news for you. After all this he is actually entitled as still one of the best footballers in the world and arguably has been ever.

lol @ the 'maybe you're young and don't understand' jibe

Asking someone to come on at 2-0 even if only a few minutes left is not pointless, absolute nonsense to suggest so.

What is disrespectful about asking a player to come on at any point in the game. There were 7 minutes left to play when he threw his strop and I assume he was asked to come on before that. He is not in good form and needs to try and recover that. The team is not going to be sacrificed to do that for a player who is past it now and will be gone in 6 months time. The managers only concern is the team. Not Ronaldo. Not padding Ronaldos goal stats at the expense of the team. There is nothing disrespectful about bringing a player on with 10 minutes to go no matter who they are.

He is done at the top level. His positives don't come close to outweighing the negatives and thats the issue. He will still score goals but he is no longer clinical and all the downsides for the team that he brings are simply not worth it. I don't know how much of United you have watched over the past year and half since he came back but I have watched nearly all of it. Ronaldo has not been good for the side.

I think Ferguson would use him however he felt best and if Ronaldo had behaved like he has then he would have thrown him in the reserves and told him to find a new team. Ferguson did that to players in their prime who were a vital part of the United squad so I don't think he would have had any issues doing it to an over the hill one.

All fair comments but I still think that "last minute subs" would have better served a youngster looking to break into the starting line up.

Did you happen to listen to Scholes making comments about this in the pre-match pundit talks?

No but I place little value in Ronaldos mates defending him. These are the same guys that claim you have to play Ronaldo because he would score chance X, Y and Z despite him missing those chances when he plays. It was the same with Ole as manager. They went to great length never to criticise Oles part in our issues because he was their mate.
