UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [26th - 28th November 2024]

Yeah, I thought Garnacho played better tonight in terms of his decision marking. He looked for the overlap more and tried to play in his teammates. It's just a shame he didn't take the two big chances that fell to him.

Hes 100% been told that hes not longer going to be trying to score every time he gets into the final third.

God, Amorim's openness about his approach is great to listen to.

Very personable in doing so.
Yeh he's the right man for the job imo.

A lot of work to do, Rome wasn't built in a day etc.

Having said that I was very surprised to see Antony start. Who didn't do anything of note that I can remember (shock..).

Not a fan of Mount but he already looks like a different player, good luck to him.

As I said earlier in the thread, I think he has been given a complete free pass this season to do whatever needs to be done to be able to kick on next season. Play who you want, where you want, when you want. He made subs last night that would have seen fans explode if EtH made them. We ended up with Casemiro at CB and he was a mess there. I think he is basically trying to balance fitness, seeing players in a match situation and high intensity training.

Antony wasn't very good last night and nor were Malacia or Dalot. To play his system he needs energetic but technically sound players and a few of our lot aren't going to cut it.

As you say, I think Mount will be a big beneficiary of this setup. Hojlund scored 2 and made the third last night so he is looking like he should flourish under Amorim. Mazaroui looks brilliant (despite what some Liverpool fans seem to think) and I'm looking forward to seeing Mainoo back in the side.

It was a mixed bag yesterday but overall you could see how differently we were set up to under EtH and how the players are kind of getting to understand whats expected. Some nice one touch passing. Good movement and runs off the ball and generally a lot more dynamic than usual.

Fingers crossed things will progress nicely over the season and we can at least get EL football but if not, so be it. The long term progress of the team needs to be prioritised over short term results.

Agreed about Hojlund. The press were saying he should bring his striker from Sporting but Hojlund will be banging them in once he gets the system right and playing well.

Rashford is 100% surplus to requirements. Going to PSG in the summer would be perfect for him and give us some much needed cash for FFP.

I wouldn't bank on Rashford going anywhere £325k a week until 2028 and he doesn't have to move to a different country.

People also keep saying we can't play his system with these players, but I think if you lined up with the below, it's a reasonably balanced team. Pace is lacking at CAM, and Mainoo will need to be disciplined, but he can learn.

--------------- Onana -----------------
-------- Yoro - De Ligt - Martinez -----
--Mazraoui - Ugarte - Mainoo - Shaw--
------ Mount ---------- Bruno ----------
--------------- Højlund ------------------

There are variations of this too, Shaw LCB, Dalot at WB, Garnacho and Amad in one of the CAM positions, Rashford and Zirkzee as support for Højlund.

At the moment Amorim just wants to see the players in action and get everyone up to full fitness.

I am delighted with his vibe and approach though, he seems honest, realistic and just a nice guy, but he's also got that ultra competitive demanding streak. As others have said, after a couple of matches and training sessions you can already see what he wants the players to do. It'll just take time to make progress, especially with games every 3-4 days. There will be mistakes.

When you look at that team makeup/formation you set out, it’s pretty good to be fair. Just need Martinez to be firing on all cylinders again as he’s been a little off whenever he’s played this season.

Dalot just doesn’t have the intelligence, nor Rashford. Garnacho should really be an impact sub like Ole, he’s never quite as good playing a full game/starting. And Zirkzee, god only knows.

Garnacho is young and can be coached saw glimpses last night hopefully Amorim is that man I feel people are way to harsh on him , Rashford on the other hand seems a lost cause but we stuck with him trying to accommodate him
