UEFA Champions & Europa League Football Thread ** spoilers ** [4th - 6th May 2021]

The irony is Turkey and Poland are both covid hotspots compared to the UK right now. The CL final should not be in Istanbul at all. 10,000 people have died from covid in Turkey in last month, around 500 in the UK. Wembley makes sense but no rule-bending for UEFA.

Wembley absolutely makes sense even if the situation was better in Istanbul. Surely they would want to have a full stadium when they host it to maximize revenue?

Reports that UEFA haven't been able to get the clearance they wanted from the UK Government; Portugal is now in the offing; likely Lisbon where last year's final was held.
Surely rather than having fans travel to Lisbon it would be far more sensible for the UKG just to allow UEFA the limited exemptions it needs to quarantine, etc - especially if everyone is fully tested several times over the course of the preceding days.

Does anyone else think that this CL final has a political brexit F U in the way that Portugal suddenly declares a a state of calamity, closing it's borders, that ends the day after the CL finals.
I mean come on, does no one see the irony of offering the CL final to the UK but then refusing when we won't waiver covid rules for the proceedings and then, instead they give it to Portugal, who coincidentally, wont waiver their covid rules and ban anyone from the UK attending.

Since UEFA are all about the fans nowadays just play it at Wembley and tell the sponsors etc to sit this one out. Its becoming an absolute farce now.

That was my point about the political kick in the teeth though, as they've done the reverse and let the delegates go to Portugal and stopped the fans. It's lame.

Its 100% what we knew they would do. They have always been about money and money comes from sponsors. Same as the clubs.

Speculating on the obvious really. If your not letting the delegates go and your not letting the UK fans go, then you've done the worst thing possible for everyone. If they don't let the delegates go then why is it any different that what the UK offered, except a big FU to the fans, who could have attended.
Given they are in it for the money, that border closing is looking like it was deliberate.

They arent going to lockdown a whole country to make political points during a pandemic.

Below mid table if Villa and Leeds have a good finish.
Still games to play this season and Arsenal guaranteed a top half finish already, in fact a point at home to Brighton would essentially sow up a single-digit placing.

Focus now is obviously on whether Spurs and Everton fail to beat Leicester and Man City, which could open the door for a Europa Conference place.
