Not sure if picked up on the coverage you're all watching but when the ref went to the VAR screen, the incident was freeze framed on the defender looking right at the ball as it hit his arm. I think it is a pen in todays climate however if the referee is seeing that frame the first time he looks at the screen then it has to have some bearing on his decision.
He shouldnt be and he shouldnt be for the sending off either. Certainly not in the PL unless its different in Europe.

I can't believe it's not a consistent procedure. The ref is shown the incident at full speed, and can then ask the VAR to replay certain parts in slow motion etc. It's so bizarre that the VAR can select the first thing the ref sees
