***UEFA Champions League Qualifying 17th & 18th***

Werder Bremen-Sampdoria is a snapshot of the state of football in both countries.

Christ.
Is it poor, or just defensive? Because I watched some of the Zenit/Auxerre match before spurs last night and it looked like they were playing a friendly. Neither team seemed to care that this was their chance to get into the group stages.

I'm shocked by Zenit-Auxerre but perhaps it has somethnig to do with the former being smack in the middle of their season.

Werder Bremen deserved to win but perhaps not by two goals. Sampdoria had a goal rightly disallowed in the first half, Bremen scored in the second and edged the game at that point for me. Pazzini was unlucky to only hit the post soon after and then Lucchini forgot to take his "sensible behaviour" medicine. He's off, Bremen score from the penalty spot, 2-0. Two minutes later, 3-0 as Sampdoria fell apart.

Overall, slightly defensive but they couldn't get on top of Bremen's midfield for long periods due to perhaps a lack of sharpness with Serie A not starting for another week yet and to be honest, they'd have been naive to just go at Bremen who are known for scornig a lot of goals so the slightly defensive mindset could be fully understood. They were clearly trying to score - at no stage did they sit back to hold on to a draw. There was no gulf in class either but the intricacies do little to sooth the desperate situation our co-efficient is in.

So where we discussing Europa league tonight?

Villa currently drawing 1-1 against Rapid Vienna.
