UEFA Euro 2012 - Group A - ** spoilers ** (Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, Russia)

Hes obviously confused that you said Cech is better at Chelsea than with the national team:p.

Just wish he would stop wearing that idiotic headgear...makes him look like a complete spastic:p

Dude, he nearly died when he got hit in the head. Do you blame him?

Also I think the reason he still wears it is because the skull in that part he took the hit is weakened.

Russia have a suspended 6 point punishment along with a hefty fine for the behaviour of their fans. Anyone find that a little ...... strange.

By all account the polish supporters have been much worse and have rather a penchant for racism. What am I missing here?

Seems very strange. Sauce?

The points deduction is reported by the BBC: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18431163

Perhaps UEFA aren't done deciding what to do yet about them?

A 6 point deduction for Russia looks like a step in the right direction, UEFA have been so weak in the past with meaningless fines and playing a match behind closed doors. Maybe if there is a repeat offence the points deduction will be harsher, and/or suspend Russia from the next competition.

What has confused you? :p

People have very short memories, sure he finished the season quite well at Chelsea, he was at times very good in the Champions League. However, he had more then a few wobbles recently at Chelsea.

I wasn't surprised that he fumbled and made a mistake.

It's not a real 6pt deduction though, suspended sentence so a repeat offence will just mean it gets triggered most likely rather than a harsher punishment being dolled out. Fine of less than £100k, that's pocket change to the Russian moneymen.

This bit made me chuckle:
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his concern over the violence to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and believes the hosts should take more responsibility.
His spokesman Dmitry Peskov added: "Putin stressed that organisers of such international tournaments bear full responsibility for the safety of fans from other countries on their territory."

Everyone knows it was Russians beating up Polish stewards in the first game that stirred things up. Yes the hosts do need to sort out security but at the end of the day if you don't try to tackle the cause/people behind these incidents then you will never contain it no matter what steps you take on the day.

I didn't really think about the suspended part, so you're right it's not as tough a stance as I first thought. At least it stands for a long time and should be applied easily. If UEFA and FIFA are united on this the long term implication is that Russia could find it very difficult to qualify for Euro 2016, and possibly even disqualified from their own World Cup in 2018. FIFA are probably too weak and corrupt to actually use that penalty, but it ought to be a potential punishment enough to motivate the Russian Football Union and government to do something about the behaviour of their fans.

@Moses: I know it applies to the Euro 2016 qualifiers, but that's not what they mean by suspended sentence. Euro 2016 qualifiers will be the next official UEFA games after this tournament, presumably starting in 2014, and basically they are saying "do it again and the ban is activated".

The penalty is suspended for three and a half years and would apply to Euro 2016 qualifying

So effectively this means, if they get busted again during the next 3.5 years (basically before the end of 2015... I'm guessing before the end of the qualifier group stage) then they will have 6 points docked from their 2016 qualifying group.

If they don't reoffend, then the suspended sentance will expire in 3.5 years and they won't be docked any points.

I don't want to be that guy buut football can't just be about thrills, excitement and darn good sport, it's also a celebration of humanity, our quest for improvement and fun and I think we owe it to ourselves to think, at this time, about others less fortunate than ourselves. At the very least, if you have no spare coin, spare a thought for those poor ***king saps in the USA who think the world series is good or meaningful sport.:D

Winner takes all in the Czech Rep. v Poland game tonight (or well, a draw will do for the former).

Mick McCarthy is doing commentary analysis. This is just getting more freaking awesome!!!!!!!!!

Poland game it is, bbc 3's commentary is horrendous! Plus this has looked more entertaining, just not sure which team I want to win
