UEFA Euro 2012 - Group A - ** spoilers ** (Czech Republic, Greece, Poland, Russia)

I don't want to overly politcal or jump on any sort of national stertyping but this is a bad night for soviet communist football and a good night tax cheats........:-P

Group A

Can somebody please explain to me why Russia haven't qualified even though they have a better goal difference than Greece?

Greece have a better head to head record.

Also, there is already a Group A thread in football stadium.

because Greece beat Russia, it's perfectly fair. Official rules:

I know I'm being thick, but out of a) to h) in those rules, which one applies here? Since russia got 5 goals total and greece got 3 total over their matches, I would have thought russia were the superior team since they achieved a higher amount of goals.

Unless I'm reading it wrong I'd say (A), Greece got 3pts against Russia who got none against Greece, if the game had been a draw and they were level on points it would go to (B) etc until it was decided.

GD doesnt apply in this instance, it's on the head to head performance between those two teams (RUS vs GRC). It seems unfair, but I'm not one to judge!

I know I'm being thick...
EDIT: the rules were probably drawn up and written down in French, then translated. The wording is not the clearest English...

you consider the rules in priority order as they are listed, in this case we don't have to look beyond a:
a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;
since Greece beat Russia the points among the teams in question is 3 in favour of Greece

So if I understand correctly, (bear with me, I don't follow football much so these rules are double dutch to me) does that mean greece were on 1 point before the match, then gained another 3 by winning? So that puts them through even though both them and russia ended up with 4 points each? Horrible rules :p

You seen a perfect example tonight that when a team only need a draw it becomes very dangerous. If Poland were better with converting there chances they would have won game by half time. Hopefully England won't make the same mistake and start on the front foot, but knowing them we gonna be in for a long night on Tuesday.

Although I should pooint out the situation in our table means head to head can't implicate us.

EDIT: But yes, I agree we need to go in for a win and really push. We cannot relax!

Ignore the points they got from other games, it's only this match that matters

a) higher number of points obtained in the matches among the teams in question;

The only teams in question are Russia & Greece for both finishing on 4pts, so the only match that matters is Russia v Greece - Greece got 3pts from it, Russia 0pts.

Teams in question: Greece and Russia.

Points obtained in the matches among these two teams: Greece 3, Russia 0.

Greece go through.

It's worded so it can be used effectively for three teams finishing on the same points, but in the case of two teams it effectively means 'whoever won when the two teams played'

I can't remember the reasoning for this one, but it was either:

  • to promote and reward positive (attacking) teams
  • mitigate against unsporting play that attempts to fix the result or manipulate GD during the final group game
I think it was the former, but maybe someone else will know for sure. The latter reason is definitely why the final group games are played simultaneously, thank the cheating Germans and Austrians at World Cup '82
