Not really. He had lost his footing and tried to use his body to block the attacker with no attempt to play the ball apart from with his hand. The opponent didn’t cause him to fall or his hand to do that, he was making sure the Czech player couldn’t get through on goal, so has to be red.

Schick did push him back down as he was trying to get back up though. I personally thought that was a foul before we even got to the (admittedly stupid) handball.

Yes, I know, I have several good Dutch friends but teaching it at academies is very different from the national side exemplifying it. The Spanish sides in recent years have played more "Total football" than the Dutch.
