Hi,

Im new to the forum, so hello :-)

Any UFC/MMA fans here? Did you watch 107 at the weekend? and what did you think?

I thought it was a pretty good event, was a bit suprised with the main event as I didnt think it would be so one sided.

Yeah Mir looked good, Congo is a tough dude and he took him out pretty easily. Although not sure whats gonna happen with the heavyweight division with Brock being out and no return anytime soon

I was very impressed with Mir. However, I still think Brock is going to ruin him. He's just far too big and skillful.

Also impressed with BJ Penn. Thought the fight was going to be a lot closer than it was. Penn is definatley one of the best after that performance.

Mir looked good, as did BJ, only real question is who's next for the Prodigy?

We were discussing it last night, once he has fought Frankie Edgar there probably isn't a whole lot more than can be done at 155. I think he might move up again, but he should have to fight 1, or maybe even 2 top 10 guys before getting another crack at GSP.

All in all, I thought it was a decent event.

UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn's Saturday night win over top challenger Diego Sanchez was so convincing, so thorough, so utterly dominant, that Penn fans and MMA observers immediately began to question whether there is any challenge to "The Prodigy's" crown at 155 pounds.

UFC president Dana White says there is.

And while some – including Penn (15-5-1 MMA, 11-4-1 UFC) – may be instantly eying a third fight with welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (19-2 MMA, 13-2 UFC), White said there's a few obstacles left in that path.

"Off the top of my head, there's probably a couple other guys here (in the lightweight division) that deserve a shot at B.J. before he took off," White said. "There's probably a couple more, and then I would consider him cleaning out his division."

White agreed that names like Gray Maynard (8-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) and Frankie Edgar (11-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) probably deserve a crack at the lightweight belt before he would allow Penn to take another shot at the welterweight division. And once there, White said St-Pierre's convincing win in the pair's January meeting at UFC 94 means Penn can't simply jump straight to the top of the welterweight division.

"I don't think he has (forgotten St-Pierre), and I think if he cleans out this division, I think he's probably going to want to go back to 170 and take a run at that again," White said. "And I think [Penn] is a different human being now than he was last time they fought.

"(But) he'd have to fight – you don't just abandon your title, move up to fight 170 (pounds) and fight 'GSP' with the way you lost to him last time. He'd have to fight a couple top contenders at 170, then maybe."

Despite not being willing to instantly sanction a match between his lightweight and welterweight champions, White admitted he was impressed with not only Penn's performance, but his preparation and attitude, as well.

"I said to [Penn] earlier today, without sounding goofy or condescending, I said, 'I'm so proud of you, man,'" White said. "It's unbelievable what he's done in the last year.

"I don't know if all you guys saw the 'Countdown' show, but wow. This kid has completely changed his life, and his training regimen is sicker than anybody's I've seen in the UFC. This kid's been coasting on talent for 10 years. Now he's doing the right thing. I'm proud of him."

As perhaps the best lightweight in MMA history, Penn has challenged himself throughout his career by fighting at a variety of weight classes, including heavyweight. But after perhaps the best performance of his already legendary career, Penn wasn't quite ready to declare his next goal.

"I have nothing to comment right now," Penn said. "I just want to enjoy tonight."

Seems White thinks he has a few fights at 155 still, I think BJ's better option would be drop to 145, get the WEC title. He would be the only person in MMA to hold 3 different weight titles, he looks as though he could make 145, I mean Urijah Faber does and he looks bigger than BJ.

This would truly cement his legacy, I can't see him beating St Pierre even with his new found cardio.

Please don't let there be yet ANOTHER interim heavyweight title.

Well I have heard they will know more in a month or two as to whether Brock needs surgery or not.
Was also rumoured that Brock has other issues too but never heard what they were.

Interim titles just seem a waste of time, but I guess Brock could be out for a long long time.... so what else do you do with the title?

I agree I cant see BJ beating St Pierre, he just seems to have moved to another level these days, although as Matt Sera proved, you only need one good shot. If BJ took his time in moving up rather than jumping up and facing St Pierre straight away then might be a different story to the last fight.

Out of the two possible apponents, Gray or Frankie... i'd say Gray would be the better choice but even then I still see BJ kicking ass

good event i thought...

was dissapointed to see Struve win, but was glad that Guida got beaten. Guida always looks busy but doesnt doesnt really hit much OR that hard...im not a Florian fan neither but ah well..someone had to win.

Mir did well and BJ looked like he was going to get a rnd 1. KO. Sanchez did well to hang in there till the last but what a cut and it was a clean ankle connection to the head too... not an unstrimmed toe nail or similar.

I watch UFC, got a lot of the dvds. You should watch the first ones, they were brutal. The first fight a fat sumo guy runs up to a karate dude, falls over, trys to get up and get a kick in the chops as he does, knocking his tooth out. The fight was then ended. Gutted for him

not much else to add - Mir, Penn & Florian looked excellent. Total and utter schooling by BJ but shocking tactics from Sanchez and his corner. 27 times he tried for a take down and 27 times he failed and yet his corner was still shouting for a take down in the last round!!

Props to the ref as I think Herb could have stopped the fight in the first round when BJ was hammering Sanchez but gave him the opportunity to fight back I think due to it being a title fight - that being said Sanchez might be wishing that it was stopped then!

The shocking thing had to be that Diego continuously tried for the single leg against the cage ... BJ is a master at takedown defense from that position.

I think that knockdown in the first round pretty much ended the fight, he was finished from that point onwards.

Fair play to the guy for coming forward no matter how much of a beating he took, can't doubt his heart.

I really couldn't understand why he continously went for a single leg that he not once got close to finishing, why he didn't try a double leg I'll never know.

He has a hell of a lot of work to do if he ever wants to stand a chance against BJ.

I think the reason they kept saying go for the takedown was that he was being completely dominated standing up and the way only way they could see a win was with some ground n pound. What they should have said was stop hugging his 1 leg against the cage and shoot for 2 legs or get him off the cage.

No doubt. I think I counted maybe twice Diego went for a takedown in the middle of the Octagon. Problem with that was he was way too slow, and the attempt was far too telegraphed.

Again, I think that knockdown in the first round really put him out of his game, he seemed uncharacteristically sluggish from that point onwards.

Yeah, he didn't look anything like his normal explosive Diego self after the first barrage of shots he took. To be quite honest, it was surprising he was able to continue after that let alone keep the same amount of composure, a clear head and level of explosiveness for takedowns; after the first round he was bound to lose one way or another.

I honestly think the best chance somebody had at beating BJ was Sherk, he just had 100% the wrong gameplan and got punished for his (for want of a better term) T-Rex arms! He has amazing takedowns, a great top game and excellent submission defence skills. I really don't know who will pose a problem for BJ in the LW division now.
