UFC 117 is fast approaching, only 5 days to go!

Fight card below, post your picks!

Main card

Middleweight Championship: Anderson Silva (c) vs. Chael Sonnen - I'm picking Chael for this fight as I believe he is the Number 1 Pound-for-Pound..... trash talker. I love the way he is hyping this fight and getting deep under Andersons skin. I really hope Chael pulls it off, if he does he will win in a similar fashion to how he beat Nate Marquardt, takedown after takedown with loads of top control and ground and pound. Sonnen by either TKO late in the 3rd or by decision.

Welterweight bout: Jon Fitch vs. Thiago Alves - Both have improved a lot since they last fought the common opponent of GSP. I think Alves will be able to stuff Fitchs takedowns and win a decision through superior standup. Alves via decision.

Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos - Clay is such a work horse, he can push a furious pace all 3 rounds which I don't think dos Anjos will be able to cope with. Guida via decision.

Welterweight bout: Matt Hughes vs. Ricardo Almeida - Hughes, unfortunately, is over the hill. He looked poor vs an even poorer Renzo Gracie in his last bought and I can't see anyway for him to win this fight. Almedia is too good on the ground and too fast on the feet. Almedia vs submission.

Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos - JDS has great potential, he has brilliant striking with knockout power, his ground game is good enough to stay out of trouble from Nelson IMO and he is one of the best heavyweights out there at the moment. JDS via KO/TKO.

Preliminary card

Welterweight bout: Dustin Hazelett vs. Rick Story
Light Heavyweight bout: Phil Davis vs. Rodney Wallace
Light Heavyweight bout: Tim Boetsch vs. Todd Brown
Welterweight bout: Johny Hendricks vs. Charlie Brenneman
Heavyweight bout: Stefan Struve vs. Christian Morecraft
Welterweight bout: Ben Saunders vs. Dennis Hallman

Will try and get my picks in before the event :)

I have a feeling Roy Nelson may be able to pull this one off! Seeing Dana's face if he does will be priceless.

Not sure who I dislike more out of Sonnen and Silva, hope it's a double KO ;)

Picking against Silva? Wow thats gutsy. Personally im going for a Silva win via guillotine. I think Sonnens habit of leaving his neck out will land him in deep water tonight.

yes thats why the odds are 10,000 to 1!! (not really) but i dont know if he can do it. JDS has done everything asked of him so far.

i dont see A SIlva losing either, he is a great fighter but is playing with his opponents liked wounded animals too much.

I think Silva will win this one, he looked out of shape in his last fight and seemed to "mess" about abit too much. I think he will have learned from that and come back better than before for this fight.

Anderson has to fight or lose his job.

Sonnen will get destroyed, an it will be even more embarassing for him because of all this trash talk.

BINGO. totally agree. and silvas skinny arms will get under the chin better than marquadts

im goin for silva (as above)
Jon Fitch via dull decision
Dos Anjos
Almeida
JDS via KO

usually experience has its disadvantages too as the fighters have taken so much damage over the years but its not the case for Anderson Silva, the only person i see beating him is himself....bit like Iron Mike.

i think an in-shape Anderson Silva will humiliate Sonnen.....bit like what he did with Forest Griffin.

Silva to win easy again.
Nelson for the win as well despite hit gut!!

I'm really looking forward to this card, have been a bit MMA starved lately.

Cant look past Anderson Silva to win the main event, I see it going a couple of rounds, Sonnen will get it to the ground, maybe land some decent ground and pound but he isnt reknowned for his ability to pass guard, and I see him getting tapped. Hope it doesnt go that way, as I'd love for Sonnen to win as he is massively entertaining, but Anderson is the better fighter.

Fitch vs Alves will depend on how well Alves can cope with Fitch's clinch game... and I think Alves is going to maul him. Alves is a fantastic Muai Thay practictioner, and I garauntee hes spent half his camp working on those short chopping elbows from the clinch. I see Fitch pressing him against the cage for the first round, taking that round comfortably, but I don't think Fitch has the gastank to hold a guy as big and strong as Alves there for the whole 15 minutes of the fight, and the longer the fight gos on the more Alves is going to come into it. Doubt Alves will be able to put Fitch away as Fitch is tough, but I see a 29-28 decision to Alves, with Fitch looking like hes been in a car smash by the end of it.

Clay Guida vs Rafael dos Anjos - Lets face it, everybody is a Clay Guida fan, I love the guy. I want him to win, I hope that he wins, but I just don't see him having any significant advantages in this one, dos Anjos is better on the feet, and although he doesnt have real one shot knockout power (and due to the fact that you need a tactical nuke to take Guida down with one shot) his striking is much crisper. Dos Anjos is also no slouch with his Jui Jitsu, I see Guida getting rocked after several shots, going for a takedown, ending up a bad position and getting tapped.

Hughes vs Almeida - I'm not sure how much Matt Hughes has left, he looked awful in the Renzo fight, and Almeida is certainly on the rise. Hughes will obviously look to rely on his wrestling and ground and pound top game... I see this going very much the way of the Serra fight, Hughes on top, being stifled, Almeida working an active guard from the bottom.. but unlike the Serra fight I think Almeida will manage to get hold of something and I see Hughes being submitted.

Roy Nelson vs Junior dos Santos - Think this will be much like the Arlovski fight, although Nelson has pretty heavy hands and is no slouch on his feet, JDS is in a different league with his boxing, and the longer Nelson gives JDS time to use that advantage the harder his night is going to be. Nelson needs to get in tight and utilise the clinch and his dirty boxing, and get the fight to the ground at every oppurtunity. On the ground Nelson has a distinct advantage but I don't know if he is quite good enough to tap JDS... or if he has the cardio to keep it there for 15 minutes... I see this ending like the Arlovski fight, Nelson takes the earlier part of the fight before turning into a mobile heavy bag, and getting dropped.

Lightweight bout: Clay Guida vs. Rafael dos Anjos - Decision

Heavyweight bout: Roy Nelson vs. Junior dos Santos - KO

Seriously pumped for this card, it's stacked across the entire main card.

Sonnen is hilarious, did anyone see the pre fight press conference? I absolutely loved it when he called Ed Soares out and pretty much hit the nail on the head with exactly what he said about him (can't stand that clown)

I personally can't see Sonnen doing it, he might get him down once or twice, but it's only a matter of time before Silva catches him with something on the feet, or more likely on the ground. Sonnen has been caught plenty of times in submissions, so I see that as a likely outcome.

Fitch Vs Alves is another interesting one, I know Fitch won last time but really it was more of a freak result due to the upkick. I only see Fitch winning via decision, whereas Alves has the tools to get the job done standing. I'm going to go with Alves via TKO, although it really is a close 50/50 shout.

Should be a good night of fights.
