Anyone remember this game? I just rediscovered it today, classic gaming! And the way it actually manages to be scary when your guys are being mind-controlled by aliens, especially in the city battles at night.
Awesome fun :)

Anyone else remember it? Anyone still play?

Yeah, one of the best games ever, the bits in the city where you get those body snatcher things, terrifying. Used to just lay waste to the place with auto cannons to avoid having to go into close combat with them :D .

Jokester

UFO:EU was a great game, i never managed to compleat it though, although when i did play it i was much younger and could proberly go through the game rather easily now, but even so, its a great game.

imo, EU is a better game the UFO:TFTD. in EU you only had land battles, where as in TFTD you have mostly underwater battles, with some in city battles, and there is nothing worse then sending youre guys out to a land battle to find out that their weapons will ONLY work underwater :/

scary as hell game :)

the music when you get into an air battle is awesome :D, along with Day of the Tentacle, the first pc games i owned

-never finished this tho, might dig it out

do you have to run it in dosbox?

I actually had some problems with crashes, so ended up downloading an abandonware version. (I dont think its against forum to say that, right?)

Great fun, anyway :) Have played a few hours in a new game today. I just got plasma rifles :D (Lots of scientists are the key!!)

AWesome game. I did complete it, but only on easy difficulty.

Money wasn't so much a problem (build extra living quarters and move your scientists at month end, no wages :) ) it was the Elirium 115, used for making alien weapons and ships which ran dry.

I remember the terror missions were quite worrying as you have the disc'y aliens and the body snatcher things and lots of civvies about, which usually got killed when your guys got mind controlled

The final mission required you to build an avenger craft and fly to mars for a double mission on the surface and under ground.

Runs "ok" on modern hardware using a dos emulator or you can slow your machine down by switching off cache ram in bios.

Biggest shame is that it crashes far too often otherwise I'd still be playing it. If you like UFO you should also try Lasersquad (by Julien Gollop), which inspired ufo. I think it's abandonware and if anyone can confirm this I'll email it to anyone who wants it. Also worth a look is Lasersquad:Nemesis. Email turn based online variant with new engine. Had a quick try once but was feeling too nostalgic to consider it at the time.

If you have a speccy emulator you should also try the other Gollop games. In chronological order:
Chaos
Rebelstar
Lasersquad < as mentioned
Lords of Chaos
I think these are also abandonware but would be interested if anyone can confirm this.

Being a bit of a fan-boy, I thought I could smell an Enemy Unknown thread!

Epic stuff, especially trying to take out the Chrysalids while they ran amok trying to infect the civvies. I found the whole research thing amazing too, and got quite excited as you slowly uncovered the aliens secrets.

Terror from the Deep wasn't as much fun though, as many of the tactical battles went on far too long, especially when you were hunting down one last alien...

Finally I intend to get my 8 or 9 year old (that long  ) original version of Xcom Apocalypse up and running when my week off finally arrives... There's something about heavy weapons and destroyable building interiors that makes me feel warm inside. :D

thinking of UFO enemy unknown just reminded me that UFO:Afterlight is out soon, 9th feb. from what i understand it carrys on from UFO:Aftershock (which i never played due to it using starforce) which itself carrys on from the bad ending of UFO:Aftermath (great game).

the oldschool enemy unknown and TftD are still good games, but have a listen to some of afterlights features:

  • Combination of global strategy and tactical missions
  • New strategic game with resource management and the possibility of terraforming in later stages of the game
  • Advanced tactical portion of the game with the possibility to enter buildings, different heights, destructible environment, thermo visions and more
  • Even stronger RPG elements, all of your subjects are known by name, complex training system, special equipment and more
  • Completely new story building on the events from UFO: Aftershock
  • Large number of new technologies, weapons and equipment to develop
  • Completely new environments on a different planet to Earth
  • More complex diplomacy option which affects the story
  • Aliens, drones and robots in your team
  • New enemies and new alien races with variable weapons and battle tactics

Still play it all the time :)

Just love the way all the levels are completely destructible, it allows for some very sneaky gameplay.

Never play TFTD much because there's a research bug that I keep running into that stops you developing new subs.

Downloading Aftershock demo as we speak :)

One of my all time favorite games ever, loved everything about this game. I enjoyed TFTD too but never really got into it as much as EU. Apocalypse was also top notch, I actually prefered the real time combat system apocalypse had. Toxin guns and disruptor armor were the !&@$ pew pew.

I loved UFO:EU and TFTD and still play them quite often. A graphics update would be awesome for these classics. Completed UFO several times but never been able to complete TFTD though as I found the research to be a bit more random so never was able to research what ever was needed for the last mission to become available.

Apparently there's a bug - you have to research things in a certain order or you get locked out of the research tree. Even after googling the problem and following the recommended research steps, it would still lead me into dead ends. Pity :(

A great game, one of my all time favourites. Tried playing a couple of years ago but couldn't get the sound to work. Might have to give it another try now.

Nah, the old school graphics are part of the attraction! Plus it means it plays on my ancient laptop, so I can fight aliens in front of top gear. (Yeah, I'm sad.)

I never managed to complete it :( Have high hopes for this time though
