Spent the last few days using the top spec iMac 24" (before the upgrade recently) and am falling in love!

Im now tempted to get a good spec iMac (not sure on size yet) and either get a cheap windows based laptop to carry around, or just use my Asus Eee.

I hate trying out technology :(.

At the moment the idea is;

Top spec iMac 24" and use Asus Eee
Top spec iMac 20" and get a cheap windows based laptop

Damn you Apple!

Option A!

Maybe because I'm selling my iMac, and I also think the Asus Eee is way cool.

I want a Mac Pro, but I will say this; I've loved owning the iMac! The best all-in-one computer out there, and it runs windows.

Perfect.

:cool:

Yeah running windows on it atm, its absolutely amazing.

I originally thought 24" was too big but after using it, it isnt at all!

The Asus Eee should be OK for when i need something to carry around, but wont run all Apps.

But now im leaving College, i shouldnt need just Windows based anyway..so if i was to get the desktop i guess if i ever needed the laptop i could get a cheap one!

The top spec iMac looks very tasty, especially if i want the odd game.

What spec did you have the 2.8ghz (same as this)?

You're not buying it to run Windows on it most of the time are you? (just checking)

Just be absolutely sure on this point. I spent many a year compromising when what I needed was a portable that could do everything.*

In my experience you will ALWAYS need Windows at some point, but I lead an IT-heavy lifestyle. This is where the new Intel Macs are great. Your mileage may vary. My life is certainly easier with a Windows box lying around.

Very true. Does this mean a Mac-laptop is out of the question? I have settled on a Desktop:Windows, Laptop:Mac setup now which suits me. I use the laptop 90% of the time and the (powerful) Windows box to do donkey work like encoding and a platform for when I NEED Windows.

*Not playing devils advocate here. I use Linux too. By proper I mean a fully fleshed out system with little obvious limitations.

^ I already have the Eee running windows.

And no it wont just be running windows, its just because i was testing out what the iMac could do to be honest.

And yes i was planning on getting a MBP but for similar price or a bit more, i could get a top spec iMac.

At the minute i dont even use a desktop.

Why would people always need Windows at some point? I don't and I do IT for a living (for my sins :( )

The only time a Windows machine is needed at home (and I do have one!) is when the wife wants to watch Coronation Street on ITV Catchup and that's only because ITV is the Devils Armpit and uses Silverlight so it doesn't work on the Mac.

Still it is useful to have the ability to install Windows on a Mac and when work pull there finger out and get me a Mac laptop I will have to do this... however little Pizmo at home will never get tainted with a Windows install! :D

Silverlight is supported on the Mac.. just tried the ITV past episodes thing and it works just fine.

I use Windows for development.. not much way to get round that :)

Buy a MBP and have the best of both worlds?

:)

Thats what i was thinking, but then im also thinking about how hot they get, so it'd need to be on a case or a table to use it properly. It's not the smallest laptop, so again getting bigger as we go.

For about 100 quid more or so you can get a top spec iMac which is VERY tempting looking at prices.

I was set on the MBP a few weeks ago until i started to use this iMac 24" :(.

If i was to get the iMac, i could always get a second hand macbook at some point if i need portability (although got the Eee too..) and also even get a cheap replacement laptop.

get the 24" cos the screen on the 20" sucks

and get the cheapist macbook :)

now thats smart thinking

Hot? :S

Mine idles at 40C, which is only 15 higher than my far far far far better cooled E6600 and loads at 70C.

I sit with it on my lap quite happily, and if it gets hot just up the fan speed abit and all is good.

I can't wait until Dec this year when I get the new 17/high res/2.8-3ghz/4gb/320gb 7200 one :DD

Think im swaying towards the iMac;

24" iMac

* 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 2GB memory
* 500GB hard drive1
* 8x double-layer SuperDrive
* NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB

£1,209.08

vs

15" Macbook Pro

* 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 1440 x 900 resolution
* 2GB memory
* 200GB hard drive1
* 8x double-layer SuperDrive
* NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics with 256MB SDRAM

£1,104.50

Personally I'd get an MBP and buy 4Gb of Ram from OCUK, it's either Mac Pro or MacBook for me, I see iMac as pretty much the same as an MBP, but not portable.

But I spose that's down to you, I like portable stuff. If you bought the MBP you could sell the Eee as an MBP can run Windows via boot camp. (while still having a portable device)

If you're worried about MBP hard drive space an external drive will do you nicely too. :)

I have no desktops at all.

I have C2D HP Laptop that should be getting repaired, so atleast i have that as well, and wont be selling the Eee.

And the iMac spec comlpetely kills the MBP :p.

And think i may just save money and get a macbook/macbook pro at a later date tbh.

Really liked using the iMac.

Although could all change soon :p.

Last time I tried it (with the BETA SilverLight plug-in) the movies just would not play. ITV sucks arse anyway so no loss for me...

I know its the Hardware section, but what must-have software is there?

So far thinking;

Aperture 2
Final Cut Pro
iWork (or Office)
CS3 Suite
.mac

Any others? :)
