UHD or G-Sync

So with the current batch of monitors available what would you recommend.

I get a UHD monitor without G-Sync (probably this? MG28UQ) and wait for the new UHD G-Sync Asus are releasing later this year.

Unless someone knows of a UHD with G-Sync that is out now?

Or go from something like the ASUS PG279Q now and then not be able to afford the new UHD G-Sync when they come out (hopefully this year)

I do a lot of web design, some video editing and gaming. So really need a versatile monitor.

You can see my PC setup in my sig, am about to install my ASUS ROG 1080ti Poseidon, literally just arrived.

Keen to get IPS I just think its probably a better fit for me. If im going to wait for the new UHD G-Sync then my budget it around the £400 mark and if im not going to wait then could stretch to £900

Interestingly you didn't mention an ultra wide 3.5K monitor, like the Acer Predator X34A. Personal choice, of course, but when you get to really expensive monitors my choice would always be to 34" UW. In my opinion UW is the absolute perfect format for a large monitor and the predator also has G-Sync. Course you could save a lot by not getting G-Sync, but it depends what games you play or more specifically what frame-rate they will run at with the larger resolution. The games I play I didn't really notice any difference in going to 3.5K but you might.

Thanks for the reply.

I did consider a 34UW but was worried it would be too big. Might reconsider it. There are very slim pickings around at the moment. Might pop out tomorrow and see if any shops have any out on display I can look at.

If possible try UHD/4K before you buy - everyone will be a bit different but personally I couldn't get on with UHD as a primary monitor and went back to a 2560x1440 screen though the UHD screen gets roped in for some productivity tasks at times and for certain games where I'm using a controller.

Yeah I wasn't convinced by them, but was just trying to future proof a little because I've just spent a small fortune upgrading everything.

I think I might go for the ASUS ROG Swift PG348Q. I am a bit of a ROG fanboy :D, and my mobo, graphics card, kb, mouse are all rog... So my OCD might drive me crazy if my monitor isn't ROG haha.

Having said that I have made up my mind and then 30 minutes later changed it again so many times over the past week. But the PG348Q looks good and has decent spec so should last a while, and then hopefully when its time for an upgrade there is a bit more choice about.

If you can afford it, then it's a great monitor.

I've changed my mind again. :(

I am normally very decisive.

Think the ASUS ROG PG279Q might be better. Its a little cheaper also LOL

I do that when buying monitors. I change my mind every day and ultimately what one I get depends on what day I happen to have the money.

Pointless buying 4K screen under 40" imo, you are then relying on Windows scaling things properly and the cost of driving all those pixels is high. At 40" and above you don't need to use windows scaling and that size format is ideal for desktop and slower paced games. If you don't want a large format screen stick with a GSYNC 1440p screen for best bang for buck.

I think you should wait for the new LG monitor coming out, VA, 1440p, 31.5", G-Sync, 165Hz, Those IPS monitor's are absolutely plagued with glow and back-light issues among other things.

LG 32GK850G

Having used UW, 4k, G-Sync monitors in some shape or form over the past 2 or 3 years my vote would be for a 1440p G-Sync with high refresh any day of the week. I didn't care for the UW all that much - just personal preference as I thought it was just too wide. 4k was nice too look at on desktop use it was pin sharp but it needs to be scaled up and some elements/apps within windows just don't do that well, plus, to drive 4k for gaming requires some mega GPU grunt. Finally I got my Acer XB270HU and I love it. 1440p at 27 inch is definitely the sweet spot for size:resolution and my GTX 1080 drives games at a sweet 100fps which looks buttery smooth especially with G-sync.
Ironically G-Sync would actually be of most use at 4k as you're working with lower fps and anything below 60fps is where G-sync comes into its own so it's sort of a double whammy in that sense.
All in all I'd say you won't be disappointed with the Asus.

They aren't 3.5K monitors. They're UWQHD, or "ultra wide quad HD."

UWQHD literally tells us what the resolution is without any ambiguity at all. 3440x1440 is okay also.

The "#K" thing really has to stop.

Bit the bullet and ordered the ASUS ROG PG279Q. No turning back now! Thanks for all the input :-) Monitors are a bloody minefield.

Ok so after having my new monitor for 24 hours I can happily say that the 1440 is a great resolution and I am glad i skipped the UHD.

Desktop and programs are perfect in 1440 any higher and it would make everything too small on a 27" monitor.

So my feedback is unless you are going for a large monitor I would say at least 32" UHD res is too high for general PC usage. Maybe for gaming it would be alright. 1440 is more than enough from my 24 hours of experience LOL.

Thanks again to everyone for the advice. Extremely happy with this monitor (ASUS ROG PG279Q)!

Glad you're happy! I would have loved that Asus but it was just too expensive and I got a good second hand deal on my Acer. The panel is great but the unit itself isn't exactly on the cutting edge of design, not a fan of the glossy bezel.
Agree about the 4k and 32 inch, any smaller than that (with windows anyway) and it doesn't scale well but then I also found that 32 inch in general was just too big for desktop use, sore neck etc from viewing the whole screen.
Gaming at 1440p with g-sync and high refresh is a joy.
