Hi can someone clear up something for me...

Basically when you foul by potting the cue ball where are you allowed replace the cue ball?

And also when you break does the cue ball have to be on the baulk line and/or behind it?

THIS is the specific game I'm referring to.

Having a bit of a dispute with a friend and want to know for sure.

Depends on where you're from I guess. Back home in the West Mids you can place it behind the line, can't shoot backwards and they play that stupid rule where 2 shots means 2 turns (IE take a shot and pot a ball, take a shot and don't pot counts as 'one' shot as opposed to having a 'free' ball)

Personally I play you can place the cue ball anywhere but only have one shot.

depends on the rule set you use, i think the new rules anywhere behind the line, most new tables don't even have a D now, and older rules is in the D

Personally I prefer to play the "free shot" instead of the "free visit", but the official rules are for a free visit; no matter how many balls are potted on the first visit, you get a 2nd.

back home we play it so that if you have 2 shots (i.e. a foul) you can place the ball anywhere behind the line (not on it). You get a 'free' ball for the 1st shot, o you can hit any ball on the table. If you pot any ball on the 1st shot, you continue yours 2 shots. You can only have a free ball on the 1st shot, after if you continue potting you retain your 2 shots. if you miss, you reduce by 1 shot.

that's the rule we played in the Bath pool league ;)

I usually play to what the other person wants/is comfortable with so the usual is to make sure the rules are sorted out beforehand. I don't care too much if it's "Association" rules or anything like that since I'm always just playing for fun. However normally I'd put the ball back in the D and shoot up the table.

Again in the D and shooting forwards.

Rules i prefer are:

After white ball sinks:

1) White ball anywhere behind the line and first shot is a free ball (can hit in any direction); you can hit or pot any ball (can't pot the black of course!). Whether you pot a ball or not with that first shot, you only get one more visit. '2 shots carry on' just makes the game too easy IMO.

2) Jump shots are allowed.

3) Free ball rule applies when you're down to the black too. (If you play 'only one shot on the black', the player can deliberately foul and snooker you for which they would need a smack anyway).

House rules always apply though, even if you don't like them. The above is just what i prefer!

When the white is potted it can be placed anywhere behind the line, on the shot after the break, and only balls on the wrong side of the line can be potted from there or its a foul. On any shot other than the one directly after the break, the white can be placed anywhere on the table and any ball can be potted on the shot.

Doesn't matter as long as both players agree to the same rules before breaking off.

There's a billion different rules.

depends which rules playing in the pub normally a mess about (old fudging rules) 2 shots carry on.lol in matches would take like 2 hrs for one frame sometimes :D pot there ball roll up to your repeat. this is why they were changed to world rules .

world rules which are more complicated and most leagues play this and i preffered this when i used to play as it speeds game up as most people go for a monster break and clearance. silly rules if proper like once you touched table you have a minute to take shot or foul.must pot or hit a cushion with white after or foul after every shot .

so if old school rules in the d .

if world rules behind the line.

The REAL and MANLY northern rules:

No two shot carry, I'm not sure WHO thought this up cause it angers me.
No picking up the white ball, deal with what you have been given.
If there are colours on the table, free table applies, if it is JUST the black free table is withdrawn.
Free table = Can hit any ball with your first FREE shot.
If you break and pot two colours, you must declare what ball you are going for incase you don't pot it.
Breaking must be behind the line OBVIOUSLY lol. You can break within the 'D'.

Oh and, there are Winter and Summer rules :p

Colours are red and yellow, black is black. There is only one black. It is not considered a colour in that sense :p

If your wondering what free table is? It says above, if you get two shots your first shot is free (can hit any ball, but must hit A ball or its two shots to them).

If it's just the black on the table it's still a free table, as you can hit whatever ball you want since only the black is on the table ;).

I think you might have meant that you only get one shot when both players are on the black?
