Uk prisons needs reform

I just can't see that, lets say someone gets sent to prison for manslaughter, purely accidental, and they didn't really do any wrong action, something just went wrong that led to someone dying.

I don't feel they deserve as harsh a stay in prison as someone who has brutally raped and murdered a string of people.

Why not? the murderers just get longer sentences. Prison should be harsh and a place to reflect, not to enjoy.

Before you can say what is acceptable in prison, you have to decide what prison is for. Is it punishment, rehabilitation, or public protection?

If rehabilitation is part of your aim, then treating people badly is definitely not beneficial.

Why doesn't it work? Not trying to sound agressive, I just don't get in what way it wouldn't work.

Because you're basically discriminating.

Imagine sending someone to their death because you were somehow 'certain' they had commited a crime yet another criminal who had commited a worse crime was allowed to live because you didn't have such strong evidence?

And even that analogy is pointless.

but murders and rapists theifs etc are segregate in prison arnt they ?

Erm, no. Certain crimes you are recommended to go on a specific wing at prisons like rape and child abuse etc.

Geoffrey Archer started in Cat A for perjury and their was a 17 year old shop lifter, first offence on remand at the same time.

Question then: How is the death penalty correctly applied in the states? What crimes carry it? And do you need a certain amount of evidence? A guilty plea maybe?

Why on earth would you want to mix the low level criminals with murderers?

If that's what you're insinuating of course.

Doesn't mean they have to be in the same block. But I think all prison should be the same. but for smaller crimes you could actually reduce the sentences we have now. where things liek murder should be increased. Some people don't mind going back to prison. If they have just committed something minor. Others find it incredibly hard and never want to go back.

IMO prison should be all things, deterrent, rehabilitation and public protection.

I do find it amusing that whatever the legal system does a bunch of people on the internet think they know better. It's a wonder you don't all become lawyers and earn lots of money, what with your amazing knowledge of how it could all be better.

so you saying people shouldn't have opinions?
Also peoples opinions are not constrained to law and budget. Which means people who work in the system can't implement what they want.

Yes, I agree, prison should be all those things. But I would still ideally want the murderers totally separate from the car thieves and the benefits fraudsters. I also agree that for things like murder, the sentences should be increased and more effort made with rehab and for minor stuff more help should be given.

Locking a single mum up for defrauding the benefits system to feed her kids solves nothing if jailing her for a set amount of time is all that is done (to use a particularly emotive example).

Surely if life in prison means life along with the american way (3 strikes and life?) just means they will cause more violence/deaths attempting to not get caught?

I believe that different crimes do deserve different levels of prison. Someone in prison for a more minor crime should be allowed more luxuries than someone who has murdered.

Although, brand name shampoo and playstations are out of the question.

How about lesser crime lesser time in prision, oh wait....

So assuming you did that where is the incentive not to, I dunno, beat the crap out of wardens etc? Being let out early for good behaviour is what maintains order in most prisons.

Why not work it the other way you get time added onto your sentence for being bad while inside?
