UK youth unemployment set to triple to 80s levels

I remember leaving school in the early '80's, wasn't great then either tbh. Would be an absolute nightmare now.

Difference IMO, at least around where I've lived (though I can imagine it being different in some parts of the north, etc.), in the early 80s, if you put the effort in, you could more easily get a foot in the door and work your way up. These days those opportunities just aren't there like they used to be. You can "get on your bike" and go around dozens and dozens of places and get zero interest [especially if you aren't exactly what they are looking for].

Yea trademen tried to actively tell me not to take days off going to do the courses for various tradework. In thier day you learned on the job and it worked for them because they are the experts who trained you and never had a qualification of any kind. To them you going off for 2 days a week was you learning less and overall making it so it took longer to get you trained up.

And how does a solo plumber manage on his own for the other two days alone? It was the best system a 1:1 partnership of master and apprentice 5 days a week. The system they created probably functions worse than the old one.

In the 70s/80s around here you could walk into any of the Potbanks on a Friday and start work on the following Monday, I have a few friends who did just that and worked their way up to senior management. These days though, more often than not, you get asked to leave the premises by security if you go around knocking on doors asking about work. And even if you do manage to speak to someone and hand in a CV you never hear back from them as it's just binned the moment you your back is turned.

Before Covid, youth unemployment was at the lowest level in recorded history, and now it's set to return to the highest level in history.

I guess young people these days are just lazy and don't want to work, aren't willing to make sacrifices and want everything handed to them /s
That's right, all those lazy young folk put out of work due to the hysterical lockdown - I mean, why don't they just start up their own business or something:rolleyes:

bait comment is bait.

Obvious troll is Obvious.
But seriously you should see a counsellor, genuinely get some help with that unresolved anger towards your parents, it won't do your mental health any good.

Are you guys purposely missing the sarcasm tag?

Many companies don't really have a HR department anymore, just a central policy HR unit, 99% of recruitment is now "online" and at that point your CV just gets' lost in the noise and the "skill filter".

Are you sure your two posts are entirely consistent? For example, would this theoretical new grocery store not be on the dying high street and not in competition with the big supermarket chains and online retailers?

no it would be within a scheme. corner shops have seen their sales triple during covid. i know everal shop owners and they are raking it in, they can't cope with demand.

who buys morning rolls online? there are some things you can only get in a corner shop. buckfast, md 20/20, etc
