Ultima with or without extra RAM

If you buy the upgrade of memory to 4Gb for the Ultima OC 8800GTX" Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 the CPU overclock is reduced to 3.2GHz - 3.3GHz region from 3.4GHz to maintain stability with all four memory banks filled.

So which is it better to have more memory or a faster processor for occasional gaming, photo editing and normal home office work?

Am I right in thinking there isn't much processor performance drop but as I will be using Vista 32 bit OS it will not make use of all the memory.

well... ok... since your gaming 2Gb and faster processor, since you will be using a 32bit OS and they dont support 4Gb of memory...

I still have no idea why anyone would get the 32bit vista - if their PC is 64 capable.
As stelly said, the 4gb will be a waste in the 32 bit system

I have read somewhere that a lot of existing kit like scanners etc are not compatible with 64 bit Vista and on other forums people seem to be recommending the 32 bit as there are too many problems with 64 bit.

64bit support is getting better and better all the time and its normally only very old hardware that isnt 64bit vista compatible.

Other than potential driver issues with X64 vista, are there any performance hits when running 32bit applications (most are) under a 64bit OS. Doesn't it have to run in some kind of emulation mode, whereas with X32 Vista they would run natively?

Okay maybe I should be going to 64 bit....although the last post by Mikeybhoy has thrown some doubt about it...

If I do my scanner won't work plus some other stuff, how about running 2 computers keeping my old system for backup and scanning etc with no connection to the internet, I believe I can link my monitor, keyboard etc to both systems with a Belkin switch2.

What is the best way to link the two PCs to transfer data but also restricting the old PC from any access to the web for security?

Richchad,

forget about the a KVM switch and keyb, mouse, monitor, all needless expense. You can setup your old PC as a terminal server (works with XP SP2 and Vista) and then login to it remotely using Terminal Services Client. It just needs a registry hack. It'll be as though you are sat in front of the old PC.

Works very well on a 10Mb and above network. Stick zonealarm on the old PC to deny access to the internet, but allow access to the "Trusted Zone", so that the new PC can access it.

I'm hoping to hear from some of the experts about 32bit apps in 64bit, so don't take what I've said above as gospel.

Cheers

Mike

Thanks for that mike, seems quite interesting, need to find out a bit more about Terminal Services Client..and what sort of network.

I might still stick with 32 bit Vista, but would like to access my old PC as well for a while anyway.

Someone posted on the AVforums that he dual booted his with Vista 32 and 64 he said that 64 was very unstable and crashes more often, 32 bit appears to be more stable and suggested I stick with that.....decisions decisions...

I'm in much the same boat as you at the minute. I have my eye on this weeks Ultima pre-built machine, but am unsure which Vista to go with. I should have gone for it a fortnight ago when it was only £999

I think its pretty poor from Microsoft that you can't buy a single product (say Vista Ultimate) and then choose whether you want to install the 32 bit version or the 64bit version from the DVD.

At the moment, I'm leaning more towards the 32bit version.

Now you tell me it was £999 a couple of weeks ago  was that with or without vat?

The offer on the Ultima OC 8800GTX" Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.40GHz is supposed to be only 'This Week' it was saying that last week, wonder how long it will be at that price.

I am quite interested in setting up my old PC as a terminal server, haven't got a clue how to do it though, have you got a link to anywhere which explains it in plain english..:D

I am pretty sure I will stick to 32 bit now, don't need the hassle of trying to get everything to work with 64 bit, can always upgrade in a year or two if things improve.

Thanks for that Mike, will do some reading later.

Had a quick glance doesn't seem too difficult, I hope :)

If this offer ends it will go up another £50

Cheers.
