Ultra settings suck!

I lived through gaming in the 80's and couldn't care less about running games at ultra. I'll happily play on whatever settings make the game smooth and playable.

It also saves a fortune not having to upgrade hardware twice a day for no reason other than more bells and whistles. A good game is playable on low settings no probs.
 
I think it depends on the game, though unsurprisingly, the more detail you crank up the less return you'll get. Going from low to something like medium usually yields a very substantial image quality gain, and the performance cost associated doesn't tend to be demanding either.
