Hi,

At work I use a laptop connected to a monitor so I have 2 screens. WFH at present and only have one screen. If I were to get an Ultra-Wide monitor for home and connect to my work laptop via VPN would the maximum resolution I could get on the home monitor be the resolution of the laptop ?

Basically I'm thinking that getting the Ultra-Wide monitor would be pointless for what I am trying to achieve, hope that makes sense ?

Thanks

By VPN?! No that doesn’t make sense I’m afraid :)

I’m assuming what you mean is that at work you’ve got one monitor that is the same native res as your laptop and you have the laptop screen plus external screen running? But at home you’ve only got the laptop currently?

If you buy a monitor for home you should be able to run different resolutions on the monitor to the laptop display if you have them in “extended desktop” mode, they don’t have to match. What res you can output to the monitor though will depend on what connection outputs the laptop has and what the graphics card can support. You’d probably need the laptop to have a displayport or Mini DisplayPort output. Or maybe USB-C. What’s it got as output types?

The laptop is still at the office connected to a 2nd monitor

I am at home using a desktop and connecting to the work laptop via VPN

Thanks

Wow ok. And the desktop at home has a monitor now but you want to get a bigger one potentially? And I assume you’re using some kind of Remote Desktop application to just view your laptops desktop at home?

Via RDP (Remote desktop) You should be able to increase your screen at home size to the maximum size of your laptop providing your screen at home and GFX card supports it.
This is on the 2nd tab of remote desktop.

Well you could use an ultra wide at home and it would give you more room on the desktop etc there, but any kind of Remote Desktop application is always going to be limited to the res of the Remote Desktop itself, in this case the laptop. So it would be a smaller window within the overall screen area I expect here

Thanks for the replies, all makes sense

Another consideration, can my home PC run the display at the correct resolution in general ?

Res is 3440 x 1440 and my video card is pretty old, its an AMD Radeon R7 200 series. Would that work ?

There’s a few models in the 200 series do you know which one specifically you have? Also what connections does it have?

And what refresh rate is the monitor you’re considering?

Ended up getting monitor, it's a beast !! And I can use it's full resolution via RDP to my laptop at work.
