Hi,

Are the Ultra Wide Monitors good for gaming (Like the Dell UltrSharp U2913WM 29" )? I keep reading people getting input lag with them even if they use the gaming mode?

I guess what I'm asking is are they worth it and if they are not can anyone recommend a decent monitor around the £300 - £400 range..

Also I've currently got a 680GTX card if that makes any difference but may be upgrading in the not so distant future.

Thanks

Decent IPS panels with 5ms response times are fine for gaming. You will always read complaints and most of them will be from people who attempted to go from a 120Hz+ 1ms TN panel monitor to one of these new large IPS type wide displays.

The 21:9 aspect ratio is excellent and allows for a nice advantage with the extra viewing are on either side.

The U2913WM isn't too bad for gaming - in gaming mode and with a few other post-processing options disabled input latency is relatively decent (not ideal but well within an acceptable compromise for the image quality), it actually beats most TNs for how quickly the image stabilises after fast scene changes just doesn't quite match the gaming TNs for clarity in motion.

Most of the U2913WM run at 75Hz (out of spec) fine also which helps a bit and if you get lucky some run without issues even upto 90Hz but those are fairly rare.

Still wouldn't use one for serious FPS gaming but its perfectly suited to more casual gaming online and single player games.

Dunno the Dell is quoted as around 25-27ms in normal mode and 17ms in gaming mode (with default settings) so I'm guessing its the older panel probably - with some further tweaking I've got mine at a guess around 14ms which isn't great but is acceptable for single player gaming, etc. given the image quality and aspect ratio - never really noticed it while playing games like bioshock and dishonored on it but was less than desirable when I gave quakelive a quick whirl.

I would be surprised if the majority of dell monitors weren't using the newer revision by now, the newer revision of the LG monitor came out a month after release (February 2013)

In which case even better, I've had the Dell awhile (May, 13) though from the stats I'm fairly sure its not based on the new LG revision :S (theres also a fairly noticeable difference between gaming mode on and off in terms of latency on mine - definitely more than 1-2ms).

i have a gtx680 as well as a dell u2913wm. gaming and movies are superb, that's all i can say. i don't have problems with input lag, or i don't notice them.

The dell, LG, AOC, ASUS 29" monitors all use the same LG panel so essentially you only really have to choose which one you like the look of better, stand for height, angle adjustment stuff, warranty, connection ports etc.

The two areas where Dell really stand out on are their stands and customer service with swap on the door policy when it comes to dead pixels etc. Quite a bit more expensive than the others though :(

I went with the 29UM65 (price being the main factor), was strongly considering the AOC one but wasn't fussed on the design, stand and wasn't too sure what their customer service would be like as well as various reports about the plastic bezel peeling of very easily.

I had to return my one though due to very back light bleed, unfortunately it seems to be quite a common problem :( Should get my replacement model today so will report back.

See if you can get a newer revision then? :p

hmm I was put off them but from what you guys say it would be good for gaming, which is what I will mostly be using it for... unless there is anything out there in that price range that's better?
