Ultrawide choice of three, differences?

I'm in the market for an Ultrawide monitor, primarily to work on, but also to watch films and do some gaming.

I am trying my best to keep the price to a reasonable level, hence I am avoiding the acer and asus 100hz gsync models and opting for any other models such as the LG, Samsung and Dell variants found here on overclockers.

The only difference I seem to have found so far is that the Samsung model is a VA panel whereas the LG and Dell are IPS. Is the VA panel superior in any way or does it have any advantages over IPS? Likewise the other way around?

Secondly, while I understand the lack of super refresh rates on anything other than the asus/acer swift/predator 100hz models, I'm wondering if anyone has heard of, or had any success with, overclocking any of the other three models. One Youtube video suggested the Dell was recognized as a superior overclocker, but I've yet to find further evidence of this. It's not a biggie, but would obviously be an extra bonus if I could prize out another 15-20hz for gaming purposes.

What would your preference be? Does one have any distinct advantages over the others that I may have missed?
 
If you do have a NVidia GPU you be crazy paying £700 to £750 for a monitor that doesn't have g-sync and only does 60hz
At them prices you might as well pay out the extra few hundred pounds and get the x34

Unless your not going use it for gaming ?

VA = films/media due to the better blacks and contrast.

IPS = Everything else especially gaming on an X34 with up to 100Hz

I've got an XR3501 35" MVA & an X34 IPS.

They both in theory are 5ms panels but the extra Hz of the IPS and the slight smear on fast transitions of the MVA mean it's dedicated to my race sim setup. Still a great monitor for watching films though.

Overclocking panels has never been very successful from what I've seen and you usually end up dropping frames when running tests on Blur Busters.

I know technically the X34 is overclocked but it's done by the G-Sync board and the latest revision of the panel is now native 100Hz.
 
It's a difficult choice then, and likely made more difficult by my rather hopeless desire to find a monitor that 'does it all'.

I will certainly look into the x34 again, as native 100hz is of course fantastic. The main reason I'd stuck with cheaper models is because my overall system build had a very specific budget, and the 200 pound saved by not getting the x34 allowed for the purchase of an m.2 512gb which I would very much like.

On a side note, I do wonder how long we will have to wait until 4k ultra-wides arrive as that would be my ideal monitor, and something I'd happily spend extra for.

EDIT: I've had another look at some 4k Monitors too (Phillips Brilliance 43"), but I cannot find a monitor at 40"+ that hasn't been said to be subject to extreme ghosting or other issues.

I should probably state that my reason for being so particular is because I tend to stick with monitors for a long while and whenever I do upgrade I like to find one that has that very strong "wow" effect that screams superiority to my older hardware. Now I realize 4k alone would be a jump (coming from 2560x1440) but i'm looking for something which will possibly have the same 'wow' level of jump in quality from when I went 1080-60hz to 1440-120hz. Is this asking too much?

60Hz isn't all that bad so long as you can keep the FPS above 60 so you don't suffer stuttering and tearing. Even just FreeSync would help greatly with running 60Hz.

It was fine on a 40" UHD monitor I had for a few months though I did have to run lower resolutions on it to achieve that. It's only when you switch from say 100Hz to 60Hz you notice the difference in smoothness.
 
GPU is a single GTX-1080 at the moment. Its a full new build i'm just about to order, only thing holding me back from pressing the order button is deciding on which monitor to get....

you mean the unreleased x34p?
 
I've ended up deciding to put off the ultra-wide monitor for a while. Until my dream 4k ultrawide arrives......

Went for a 43inch Phillips 4k panel instead, purely for the size, screen real estate and a demo I saw of it being used to play some of the latest games. The 60hz 4k alone will push my single gtx 1080 to its limits from what I've seen, and I simply couldn't bring myself to pay 200-300 pounds more just for G-sync.

Long term plan is to double up on the 1080 and wait for the 4k/5k ultrawide's. No idea how long i'll have to wait though, hopefully not too long, I can't be the only one who'd splash out a small fortune for such a monitor?
