Hi all

Not really sure what i'm doing :p

I just got an old PC set up, and didnt really know what to do with it.. so i followed the instructions at the top of this sticky and its running now..

What am i actaully doing? :p And is there anything else i need to do?

Thanks :)

Welcome to the team. :)

Have you put the extra code for folding using regedit?
Get fahmon this will tell you about the folding and will give you a log. Check the log, it should say Extra SSE boost OK. If not check the regedit codes.

Do you have a dual core cpu, if so have you set it up 2 clients?

Out of curiosity what spec do you have?

Welcome, Mr. Benjo! What you see when FAH is running is a process called FahCore_xx.exe running at about 100%. This is a scientific core and there are a bunch of difference ones, each identified by the numbers in the xx bit. Each core is for studying a different type of situation and that sort of thing. So what it does is download the WU, a set of points and information about a potien or a series of proteins. The core is the program that processes the next movements of the protein as it undergoes whatever process they're studying.

To see exactly what each WU is studying go to the projects page.

Yep, the log says Extra SSE boost OK.

The spec isnt that impressive.. its just something a friend lent me, and it hasnt really been doing much. Its a P3-500mhz, 256mb ram.. :p

Oooh i see :)

So how do i actually check its folding? It doesnt seem to be doing much at the moment.. (maybe i'm expecting too much) And also, how do i join team ocuk?

Well it'll write to the fahlog.txt file every half hour when you've told it to checkpoint every 30 minutes. This means that even if it doesn't finish 1% of a WU in that time it'll save its progress anyway. If it does do 1% it'll write it down, save the progress, and move on to the next 1%. Use a program like FahMon or Electron Microscope III to monitor its progress graphically, rather than just reading log files.

If you told it Team 10 right after you told it your username, you're already onboard. :) Your username will appear in the stats as soon as you submit work back.

Not really though :p. It'll show up when you submit work AND the server updates, sometimes 3 hours after the WU was returned.

There are also 3rd party stats monitoring sites like Extreme Overclocking where you can see a plethora of useful stats-type data.

Ok cool, yep its using about 95% of the CPU, i chose team 10, and its been going for about 20minutes :)

The rig is gonna be running 24/7 hopefully.. and its just dedicated to folding.. shame its not a brilliant spec :p

So i should see my name on the team list by tomorrow?

Cool.. :)

edit: Ooh, and yeh i'm using FAHmon

Whats the ETA on the WU in fahmon. You will see your name on the list when it is complete and is uploaded.
On my X2 3800+ some WU's take over 24 hours to complete so a P3 500mhz must take forever. Just wondering as some WU's have deadlines where they have to be completed by a certain date so your's might not complete it in time.

On a non-ringer machine like that :p...

It might take quite a bit for it to finish its first WU. FahMon will estimate the completion time once it has some data points to work with. You can do it manually by seeing how much time it takes to do one percent and multiply that by 100 percent. I wouldn't be (too) worried about it not finishing WUs as long as it's on most all of the time.

EDIT: Owned by my slowness!

oh.. seems pretty pointless then :p

The ETA is still at N/A after about half an hour :/

edit: Its just done something:

[05:37:48] Completed 50000 out of 5000000 steps (1)

woooo 1% \o/

Lol.. well it did 9% last night.. the ETA is 4 days :/ Maybe the P3 is more suited to seti@home whilst my athlon xp 3200 at the moment would be ok for folding? If so then i might switch their roles around

I'd say that's a good idea. It's more important that Folding WUs are returned quickly than SETI WUs, because with Folding the results of one WU are required to generate the next one, where SETI WUs don't really depend on one another.

Righty, i've got my XP3200 crunching now... but i still think it takes ages :p

Its doing about 1% every half hour :/ This seem about right?
