Is there a way to do this as i cant find the option to do it in the bios? Im looking to get 400Mhz FSB with a 10x Multi (So 1:1 with the RAM). However when i go into the BIOS and manualy change it (Default of 200Mhz and 800Mhz on the RAM ?!?!?!? WTF) it increases the RAM's speed :confused:. So if i put the CPU FSB to 201Mhz the RAM's goes to 804Mhz. I thought you doubled the CPU FSB to get the RAM's FSB, or am i being a complete n00b :confused:?
 
The RAM is DDR2 so it's running at 2 * 2 * FSB in your case so 4 * 201 = 804, as you increase the FSB you'll have to change the RAM divider to keep the RAM running roughly at its rated speed.
 
Intel chipsets cannot set the Memory to run at a fixed speed while changing FSB. In your situation, what you need to do is lower the Memory Speed in BIOS by lowering your System Memory Multiplier in the Gigabyte's BIOS. Sounds as though the current ratio is running at 1:2. You may need to hit CTRL+F1 while in M.I.T for the setting to show
 
Cheers for the replys guys. I had a go at what you surgested. I set the memory multiplyer to x2.0, the CPU FSB to 350 so the memory FSB was 700. I went to increase the vCore to 1.40 volts and it was flashing in red at me "System voltages are not optimised". I thought to myself "thats nice" and saved the BIOS. Once it had rebooted i check CPU-Z and it was still running at 3.3Ghz :( . After rechecking the BIOS it had re-set my CPU FSB to auto and my RAM multi to auto :(. Is there a way to stop it doing this?
 
Go up by 0.025v at a time til you get what you need. Then you can lower it a touch.
 
I'm currently at 3.4ghz (378 x 9) with an e6600 in a gigabyte X38-DS5, the same one as yours. Currently sitting there stable at 1.43 ish, vcore. First question, are all the dimm slots populated? I had 4 x 1gb geil in mine, and the highest I could get that stable was 365hmz (1:1 ddr 730mhz). I flogged that and 2 x 2gb ocz 6400 stuff and thats running at 378mhz (ddr 740mhz). I only got it today so I haven't had time to see how it'll go. It appears taht these mobos don't like all dimm slots populated.
As said earlier, basically you have to use the memory dividers to try and keep the memory speed as near to stock possible, you don't have the option to "lock" the memory speed irrespective of the fsb. And as Cob says, you'll need more than1.4v Vcore to get to 3.5ghz. It it was me, I'd drop the multi to 9 and see if I could get the fsb higher, which would also bring your memory speed up as well.
Other than the DS5, what are the other system components?

Ok, i got it running at 3.5 Ghz (350 x10). I have been running orthos for arround 15 mins.

Temps seem to be fine. Can this chip go up to 70*C like all the other Intel Quads?
 
I would still try a 9 multi and try 388mhz fsb, that'll still give 3.5ghz, but will get the memory running a bit faster nearer its default speed. Also, is the Vcore at or near 1.5v? it looks like it is going by the cpu-z screenie, if so, I'd try a tad lower, which will lower your temps a little but don't forget to check for stability. :)

That is what i am going to try next, well almost. Going to try 400 x9 on the same volts, which are set at 1.45 in the bios. I have to say i was quite surprised that CPU-Z was showing 1.472. Anyone know why it would go higher than what it was limited to in the bios?
 
Odd that, usually it shows vcore lower than is what set the bios due to Vdroop. For 3.5ghz-3.6ghz you'll probably need at least 1.5Vcore but its worth trying a lower Vcore to start with as it keeps the temp down a smidgeon.
What have you got your FSB and MCH voltages in the bios set to btw? iirc I'm at 1.5v for both.

Yeah i would have thought the Vdroop would have lowered it. The vCore is the only voltage i have changed, all the others are set to auto
 
Ok, i tried 400 x9 last night and i couldn't get it to post. I set the vCore to 1.48v and left everything else to auto. Are there any other voltages i should have changed?
