Hi all,

Windows 10 has started nagging me that it can’t install security updates as my version is too old. I’ve put of upgrading it since the last time it happened I had to do clean install and I just couldn’t be bothered as it’s working fine. However I decided to give it a go at the weekend - I created a bootable USB key and started the upgrade as per normal.

I immediately ran ino problems as it said my boot drive was mbr and wouldnt install to it.
I deleted the partition and created a new one which the orogram was happy to install to.
However once it rebooted after installing it came up with a file error and wouldn’t boot.

I tried everything I coukd think of but couldn’t get beyond this part on multiple occasions
. In the end I had to use the usb to boot into repair and recover my latest system image.

I tried setting up the disk using diskpart and nothing seemed to be on it so Im not sure whars going wrong.
Any ideas / help because i’m getting fed up of windows trying and failing to installl the update every time i boot up

Once Windows 10 setup has boote from the USB stick and you reach your first purple screen of setup, press Shift + F10 on your keyboard to being up command prompt.
1. Type in diskpart to load Diskpart.
2. Find your SSD drive, or the drive you want to install to by typing list disk. Select the drive by identifying the size and typing in select disk 0 - replace 0 with whatever disk # your drive is - but it should be 0, ideally.
3. Type in clean to completely erase the drive.
4. Type in exit twice to leave diskaprt, then close the command prompt window.

One more tip is to only have the drive you want to install Windows to connected until the setup has successfully completed. I've only had to do this once and that was when I had IDE drives - that's how long ago it was!

Thanks darael,

I did try Diskpart a couple of times but it didn't seem to work (I didn't do the exit command after I did clean though - would this not finalise the change?
I have to say by the time I gave up I can't swear what I did as it was very early Sunday morning when I gave up and reinstalled my original...

However I do remember using dsikpart to create a fully unallocated disk and it went all the way through and then failed with the same blue screen after reboot.

I suspect it's something to do with the old bios on my PC - could it be trying to boot from the wrong partition created by the GPT process? (even though it supposedly can handle both legacy and euifi).
I'll try and do some research (wish I could remember whatever workaround I used last time - or possibly the older version of windows 10 wasn't so picky about not using MBR...)

did you create the right kind of bootable usb ?

When I created the bootable usb, using rufus, I declared it as uefi at that point (could have been mbr),
I thought, that was declaring the system being used for both the usb and the eventual target install drive, ......but maybe I misunderstood

Thanks for the help so far - not had time to do much but I created a Rufus USB with EUFI on it last night and it boots to it with no problems (didn’t try installing W10 again as I just can’t spare the time ATM). I’ll have another go at the weekend when I have more time.

One thing I did find is that the brand new USB key I was using at the weekend is now dead - might be why I was having some of the problems
