Hello,

My network did consist of 3 PC's, an Xbox, a Netgear wired router and a Cable Modem. All wired with Cat5.

Now, I recently bought a laptop with integrated WiFi. In the garage I had a brand new 3com ADSL Wireless router left over from a job for a customer I did about 2years ago. I have never wanted to use it since as it's an old model and technically second hand so I stick to new Linksys/Netgear models for current customers.

Now I have set this up to act as a wireless brigde. Plugged into the Netgear router instead of the Xbox and the Xbox into the 3com ADSL router.

DHCP server in the 3com is disabled and everything is running fine.

I have set a similar system up for a customer before with 2 netgear routers after the customer had bought an ADSL wireless router instead of one with a LAN input.

The problem I have is that I am unable to login to the 3com router via it's IP address. The IP address of the Netgear wire router is 192.168.0.1 and the 3com wireless is 192.168.1.1. The DHCP releases IP's starting 192.168.0.X.

Now, what's the reason for not being able to login to the 3com router?

Is there an "IP Convention" for the routers I should stick to. As you can tell I am not experienced in systems with multiple switches, access points etc.

Thanks,

Chris

For a start, the Netgear and 3com are on different subnets (assuming they are both on a 255.255.255.0 subnet mask) So will not be able to communicate with each other. Also anything on DCHP will not be able to communicate with the 3com either.

Try changing the 3com ip address to something in the 192.168.0.X range (pick an ip that's not in the dhcp pool)

thanks, that was exactly it. Do you know any good sites I can read up on about how IP addresses work etc and also subnet masks?
