I've just bought a Samsung 970 SSD and moved my data from my old WD SN550

Everything is working fine. The problem is I can't wipe the old Western Digital drive. I have tried using the WD Dashboard and used it to create a bootable USB stick. When I use that to "sanatize" the drive it gives me an error "sanitize operation failed"

Any idea how I get around this?

Was the wd drive your main drive before you swapped over to the Samsung ie your Windows operating system drive

Going by the WD Dashboard user manual (page 18), Sanatize only works on a WD Black PCI-E SSD and the option should only be available if one is detected.

Can you use Secure Erase instead?

I did try both secure erase and sanatize. Funnily enough I spoke with the tech support live chat at WD. They didn't bring up sanatize only working with the WD Black drives. In fairness though, they also asked me to unplug the power and SATA cables from the drive.

I managed to get this wiped last night. I used the secure erase feature in my motherboard BIOS.
