Just a few questions about the railcard

How much?
Can you get discount buying online tickets with it?
How much discount?

Think I am going to get one today as I need to buy a ticket for £19 and one for £25 (then any others i will need) but would like to know the general savings that can be had and if they can be used online

Thanks

You can get a 3-year 16-25 Railcard right up until the day before your 24th birthday.

What really annoyed me about the 16-25 railcard is that unlike every other railcard in existence it cannot be used for discounted First Class travel with the exception of a few of the advance fares. I don't really understand the reason behind that.

Why would students want first class travel anyway :D

I just booked a train from London to Leeds and went for first class as it was virtually the same price as normal class. I'm not sure if the railcard made a difference.

Get one. You save a fortune if you use it often. I go to Leamington and Birmingham at least twice a month, normal ticket from Salford is £30, i pay £20. If i do it twice ive already saved the £20 which paid for the YP Rail card.

Thanks. I'm 24. If i apply for a 3 year one, will it not work after next year?

Not sure, as I understand it you can apply for a rail card up to the day before your 26th birthday and it will still be valid. I was 25 last December and was still able to renew this April.

It's saved me thousands over the years, not sure I'll cope paying full fare once I'm 26 :o

assuming you travel in that area.

No need to thank me.

What the hell, i am trying to order a railcard online and i enter 10-10-84 into the birthday part. it comes back saying

'Invalid date of birth entered.'

Plus 1st > standard.

I always travel 1st...for free too...is great, nice and quiet, no little kids. Can watch films on the laptop easily as I have a table or read a book etc. Loads of leg room, is great. :D

OK, I can select 10/10/84 from the list and when i put in my driving licence it comes back invalid date of birth.

If i put in 10/10/85 and change one of the numbers on my driving licence to 85 then its ok. Should I just continue and do the '85 one?

Can I not get a 3 year one, even though i am under the age of 25?

well you'll be over 25 before it expires if your 24 now so maybe not, I have one of these rail cards (im 23) but I don't need to use it as I have a pass for the train.

You can't apply for a 3 year one if you are over the age of 24. It quite clearly explains this on the FAQ section of the website.

So no, lying about your age won't be the way foreward :p
