Under-rated games for cheap.

How are we defining "underrated"? Because the majority of the games listed received high acclaim from both reviewers and consumers.

It's subjective, because the reviews were mediocre, but I enjoyed it - Assassins Creed 3. Also, it's free through Uplay.
 
Oooh yeah the Tomb Raider reboot, is an incredible game. Battlefield Bad Company 2 is still one of the best FPS's around and has a very active player base, and if you search for modded servers you can play the Vietnam DLC for free too.

Also i wouldn't be to quick to rule out indie games, they offer some of the best gameplay experiences around now

cheap and good and not a blockbuster hit (E.g. COD / CS:GO / GTA )
 
Currently enjoying Life is strange if you are in to the telltale games this is similar in how it plays. Interesting story just some questionable dialogue but for around £5 for the series you can't go wrong. On the final episode now

Yes, its 'slightly' well known but for less than the cost of a beer you get hundreds of hours of gameplay. I am working my way through Final Doom TNT Evilution at the moment on ultra violence and some of the levels are taking an hour alone

Coupled with free mods SGtMarkIV brutal doom mod and GZdoom there is no reason not to buy it

edit, it was £3.29 10 minutes ago, no idea why it has just changed to £9.99 again. Maybe its because they knew I was going to but it just for the master levels so upped the price

Steam winter sale just finished, so all the prices have jumped back up again.
 
As others have said, insurgency is great for the quid or so it costs everytime there is a sale.

Another 4X game I would recommend is Endless Legend. Not only does it have a beautiful aesthetic, it's a very solid strategy title and the races play very differently. At a fiver or so on key sites I'd definitely recommend giving it a crack.
