UNDERclocking?

I was wondering, is it ok for me to underclock my 4890 to 500 core clock 595 mem clock while I'm not gaming? It really seems to help with heat and this way I can turn the fan speed down to 27% and it idles at 45 degrees C. I don't mind the fan noise while gaming (I have it up to 45%) but while I'm just browsing the internet it's annoying

i once underclocked a 266mhz socket 7 to 133mhz ... that seemed to work fine

i know im going to get so much **** for this but hey this was like 10 years ago ... when you had to control bus speeds with jumpers on the mbrd

Not sure if the GPU overclocking software allows for underclocking.

But like Lima back in the day I have underclocked many a system when it required to run on low power low heat.

Specially with the power waste of the 48xx at idle it sounds like a reasonable plan.

4890s idle at low power, what frequency does yours idle at? Because all Gpus run at low speeds at idle, if not overclocked.
