Has anyone ever done it?

I have a Q6600 on H50 and would be interesting to see if i could turn run it at say 1600mhz and have all fans turned off and just run the pump.

Of course theres not much point because my 8800GT fan would be working, along with the PSU fan. The 8800GT fan is hardly noticable on 20% anyway and the psu isnt exactly loud

Could be used like this when playing music and web browsing in the future

Considering a 1.6gHz Atom will passively cool with the tiny heatsink in my laptop, a decent radiator should be able to handle a Q6600 easily enough.

Give it a go, tell us what happens :-D

Before my watercooling I did this on my E6600, to keep my fan noise low whilst sleeping. I'm not sure exactly how low my temps/volts were now but it's worth a play. I think I could get 200*6 for 1200MHz and maybe around 1.000vCore

Or you could get a CPU that supports low power states and an ATI 5000 series card :)

My I7 is overclocked to 4.2 Ghz, but it idles at 2.4 Ghz while using the internet using the low power state settings in the bios, and the 5800 series cards now idle at 150/300, in Crossfire the second card is shut off entirely.

Much better odds if you mount the radiator horizontally. In practice I imagine it'll idle passively with no issues, but won't cope with ibt.

I used to have my Q6600 under an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro (hardly the best heatsink in the world) @ stock without a fan, no problems. That was before I started folding, though. Not directly comparable but tbh an H50 is overkill that may turn out ineffective compared to cheapo traditional heatsinks if you're planning on using it passively - might be worth considering selling it unless you plan to use it occasionally, in which case - try it and see.

^ Im using it all the time @3.6ghz so i will be keeping the H50 for the time being. Starcraft 2 and the like demand a nice fast cpu
