Underclocking?

I leave my PC on overnight to download, so would like to underclock to get temps as low as possible so I don't wake up hot..)

I don't know a lot about OC'ing but I know higher voltage = higher temps.

Anybody know what the lowest vcore I could set to if I underclock to around 2.4ghz or so?

I have an Intel i7 3820 at stock 3.9GHz @ 1.28v - ASUS P9X79 PRO

Do you have speedstep enabled? As I'm pretty sure if you do it does quite a good job of managing heat\power when the system is idle. I would fire up CPUZ and have a look at what its already at when just browsing the web.

I'm assuming I don't have it enabled as it's constant 3.9ghz, and I haven't been in the BIOS to change it.. Will do that now and see how that goes.

Currently got it at 2.2ghz, 1.070 vcore, 29 - 34'c

You need to play about with the voltages. I find up to a 0.125v drop is usually stable; although yours could be completely different, probably more. Just make sure your higher multipliers get more volts; Otherwise you'll crash if you do anything taxing.

Just try dropping 0.1v at a time on all multipliers until you get a good stable balance, then adjust accordingly so that higher multipliers have more.

You can use RMClock to set temp clocks in your os and not through the bios. I.e. Start the program at night and then turn it off when you want.

Got it to 2.4ghz at 1.070vcore, then shut down PC to check if speedstep was on and it reset itself.. Perhaps I should save my profiles in the ASUS AI Suite.. :p

why not try setting everything back to auto, if i leave my 3930k downloading it automatically clocks down to 1200mhz @ 0.8v

If you are going to rely on speedstep make sure there isnt any task/application loading the cpu when you're not looking as it will cause it tun at higher multi/volts. For eg buggy origin by EA will often consume 30% cpu resources doing absolutely nothing (truly nothing), bumping the clock to full, so I make sure to manually close it after use.

If you have an ASUS MB, did you get the EPU-6 software with it? That's what I use, and my PC usually sits at a quiet and cool 1.5 GHz when not in use - or indeed when all I'm doing is typing as I am now. Overnight it's set to do backups and then a big database build which loads up all 4 cores to 100% load for a while, and during that EPU-6 sets it to 4 GHz (the fastest I can safely over-clock my i5-760), then drops the speed back when the run is over.

I know some people say don't use Windows software to control over-clocking, but EPU-6 has worked well for me.
