Underfloor Heating

As a slight thread hikack. We have a pretty small bathroom and my wife wants to replace the tiles in the floor Maybe 3m square at most.

At the same time she wants to add some underfloor heating. Are the strips pretty thin for the underfloor heating or will it be a bit of a ballache to do and having to raise the height of pipes for the toilet/sink etc to accomodate the extra floor height?

Read a piece in one of my trade mags last year about aerogel insulation sheet & it's uses including underfloor heating.

That's good to know. I'm going to see how much it will cost. Initial impression is it is not the cheapest material but I know it is exceptional as an insulator.

I think the mat itself tends to be very thin but you need insulation below it and some other layers above. The insulation alone will add 6 mm at minimum thickness. More will improve the insulation and minimise heat loss below the floor.

Depends where your bathroom is.

Our is 1st floor on timber floor boards with our dining room below. There's no real need to insulate and upset loads of levels and have a big step up into a bathroom.

I bought a £100 mat from eBay that had a controller and thermostat and it's been great. It means we can turn the house heating off sooner and on later in the year and just use the ufh in the nippy bathroom.
