They havent been as dominant as they have been in the past due to the USSR being broken up. When they were the USSR they gave the Americans a good run for their money. But now its a shootout between the Americans and China...they are head and shoulders above all the other countries but then when you have such a huge population, it doesnt take a genius to figure out that them 2 will always dominate the medals table.
Im more shocked at how bad the Aussies have been especially in the swimming events as usually they are pretty strong there. Even Thorpe i think has been pretty shocked at how badly his countrymen have done in the pool.

Remember in Greece, Ian Thorpe won majority of the swimming... they don't have that dominance anymore. Their team sports in Basketball isn't doing too bad, especially Women.
