Understanding HDMI

The video signal on an HDMI cable is identical to that output by a DVI port. What ATI do is use some of the normally unused pins on a DVI port to output audio, you then use a special dongle to convert the DVI port to an HDMI port. The dongle joins the extra audio pins to the appropriate pins on the HDMI cable and Bob's your uncle.

The thing to note here is that you need the special ATI dongle, any old DVI-HDMI dongle won't have the right pin connections for the audio.

thanks for clearing that up.

If I wanted to just use my motherboard 7.1 sound card there is nothing stopping me is there? I just put the DVI port to HDMI on back of TV and the sound through my normal 7.1 setup?

Just to add a bit to that: ATI cards (if retail/new) usually come with the correct DVI-HDMI converter :)
