Understanding the Nvidia boost clock.

I just want a better understanding of the clock speed I am hitting on my 1080.
For instance, If I set 1930Mhz as my core clock, I am then getting a constant 2075mhz during the Fire Strike Stress test. So is the 2075mhz my true clock speed?

And will it hit this in games or is it just the maximum boost I will get if the game calls for it?

It makes the card goes pretty much as fast as it can while still staying in power and temperature limits. Exact clocks depend on load levels.
 
It is just that I hear people saying they are getting 2000mhz and I wonder if they mean that is their fixed boost speed, because if so they must be hitting 2200mhz during stress testing.
 
games often stress the gpu more than synthetic benchs, but more importantly the play sessions are way too long compared to a bench, but it all goes down to the temperature of your GPU or power limits.
so during the summer in a long game session with a demanding game, you will most likely be playing close to base clock rather than 2075mhz
 
My understanding is that each card will have a boost clock depending on which card/ BIOS.

For example EVGA SC has boost clock of 1847Mhz

So, if I set a +100 on the core it will then give it a boost clock of 1947Mhz.

However.... Boost will go even further than that if there is headroom as far as power and thermal go, so would perhaps boost to 2021 (for example) until such time as the temp reached a certain point or the power limit was breached, at which point it would back off the clock.

I hate the whole boost clock thing. Since nvidia started doing it their cards have just not been as stable as they once were :/

The advertised boost clock will be same for each card of any SKU. However silicon lottery will play a part in to what the boost software is able to extract in terms of maximum clockspeed.
 
I have an MSI 1080 Gaming X.

Specs:
Core Clock: 1708MHz
Boost Clock: 1847MHz

When i ran 3D Mark Ultra with no overclocking applied, the core clock hits 1949MHz.

Don't ask me why, i assume GPU Boost 3.0 just pushes it as far as it reasonably feels it can go so you actually go beyond the advertised boost clock. Then you need tinker with OC settings to get more out of it.

Max i can hit using Afterburner and getting a stable 3D Mark Ultra run is 2100MHz. Since it's hitting 1949Mhz anyway without any Afterburner tweaks, i'm just leaving it like that. Don't need the extra on the core clock atm.
