Does anyone else get so annoyed of middle lane hoggers, they just give up hope and undertake?

I went to London the other day and on the M25 for some reason middle lane hoggers were rife.

Was on the M4 coming back from London, a few middle lane hoggers and we actually caught up with him on the left lane, then slow down and moved onto the middle then fast lane to over take him.

Nope, I overtake them instead. ;)

Myself and my girlfriend were heading down to Portsmouth on sunday on the A3, sitting in the outside lane, overtaking traffic doing about 75mph. A Volvo T5 came screaming up behind us, flashing his lights, the lot. There wasn't any place to pull in to let him past, so I carried on, not being pushed by him.

The second there was a space in the left hand lane (its all dual carriageway) he swerved into the inside lane and undertook. If he'd waited about 5 seconds more I would have pulled in!

some people

I sit in the inside lane, on their arse until they get the hint. If they don't i drop it down a gear or two and fly past them. I wont sit on his ass though or flash lights at them. Achieves nothing.

Drives me wild.

I take it you are referring to overtaking on the inside? ;)

I don't get worked up at all. I just move to the fast lane and overtake as normal. I don't see the point in flashing lights or swerving in violently to 'teach them a lesson'. The drivers who spend their days on the roads trying to teach us all a lesson are more dangerous than middle lane hogs.

thats the problem though
inside lane - totally clear - literally

the other 2 lanes are moving 65-70mph and are full of traffic.

Middle lane hogs suck, but undertaking is extremely dangerous. The only near-miss I've ever had on the motorway was when I was overtaking someone in the middle lane that was doing about 75, I was in the far right lane doing about 85. The guy I'm overtaking pulls into the driving lane and I see a Volvo caning it up behind me in my rear view mirror so I indicate to pull over so he can get past. The next thing I know I'm almost pulling into the idiot in the Volvo as he flies past me on the left doing over a ton.

The left hand blind spot is usually much bigger, and people don't expect to be overtaken on the left, you're likely to get driven into. Not good.

I do indeed. If you're hogging the lane and the next lane either way is free i'm coming by. I give maybe 15 seconds, then drive a little closer, then a flash, then i'm going around (in the case of the undertake, for the overtake of course I just indicate, and move over). Maybe a little irresponsible but you have to be some piece of work to hog a lane like that, so IMO the hogger deserves a bit of intimidation.

I mainly use motorways in the early hours and you always get these clowns, my favourite is overtaking them in the overtaking lane then drop back into the slow lane, if they stay there..I let them pass me again, then repeat as necessary. It keeps me entertained..

I remember going around one guy's car like this the whole way from Manchester Airport to Chester, must've gone around him 20 times and he still just sat there completely oblivious ...

I find the std of driving on our motorways is really poor, you either get the middle lane moron, or the outside lane sheep, who just sit in a queue of traffic effectively all braking in tandem as they are far too close to each other , the amount of times i have gone past people by using the lanes correctly is scary.

The other idiots are the people who sit in the inside lane doing forty  the havoc they must cause for the lorries.

Oh and the other idiots is me, my driving has gotten really poor lately all the idiots on the roads wind me up and i must stop tailgating :(

haha

I do the big swerve, inside lane to outside, past them, then back in. It's a pain when I should only have to switch one lane but hopefully sometimes people realise that I'm swinging back to the inside for a reason and learn something. Probs not :(

Yep, I'll undertake if needed. But if I do so, I'll keep my eyes glued to the middle lane. First signs of someone moving over, I'll be more than ready to react quickly and safely, rather than cause a massive pile-up.

I was on the M62 a few weeks back and was in the outside lane, needing to get over to the inside to come off at the next junction. So, I move over to the middle lane, where there's a big truck blocking the view to the inside lane.

I was doing about 55-60mph.

I start to move over to the inside where some stupid **** is sat there doing about 20mph   Cue major swearing from my behalf. I had to move over to the hard shoulder to stop myself from hitting the car. ******* idiots some people!

Yup, there's a guy driving a red Astra who seems to do 30mph along the stretch of the M56 between the M6 and Chester every evening in rush hour, often causing a silly amount of congestion as lorries overtake

I do that, it brightens dull journeys. ;)

I undertake as well (but I can assure you that I don't drive either of the volvos that have been mentioned on here).

I don't do it at stupid speeds, or just to make one space in the queue. I only do it if I'm stuck behind the person in the fast lane and they have no idea what their mirrors are for.

Is it not knowing what the mirrors are for, or is it because they are too arrogant to move over even though they know full well you are behind them and want to go faster? The latter I expect.

I regularly undertake when I use motorways / dual carriageways because there are so many inconsiderate idiots on the road.

I've never bothered hanging around to ask.

I was driving down the M3 the other day and there was a bloke in the outside line when there was no other traffic about, just me, him, the car behind me and space for about half a mile.

I came up behid him and waited and waited, but nothing happend so I went past him on the inside. At this point he flashed me and then moved into the middle lane to allow the car behind me past.

He then pulled back into the outside lane.

Very weird and I'd love to know the thought process he was having.

How much are those LED signs that display messages that you can put in your rear window? hmmm...

It would be cool to display certain sections of the highway code on one.

If I'm sat in the outside lane overtaking people inside me - and then some idiot speeds up behind me flashing etc - it really really annoys me.

I'm overtaking - I'm doing it correctly - I'll move in when I get the chance - flashing and waving your arms isn't gonna make me drive any faster, or move in before it's safe

In fact usually it only makes me think of slamming on the brakes and watching as he flies into the back of me - crushing his steering wheel though his skull and leaving me with whiplash and no blame in the subsequent insurance claim! Of course its only ever a thought!

Driving on the M66 the other week some idiot tried the flashing and waving - he was weaving in and out of the lanes - ironic thing was he was slower moving in and out of the lanes than the rest of the traffic going at a constant speed - some people are just a little bit stupid!

I do exactly the same :) I often drive at ~80-85 on an empty motorway, so if there's someone doing 70 or less in the middle lane, I'll come right up in the inside lane, indicate, pull right round them into the outside lane, still indicating, coming quite close to their rear quarter, then as soon as i've passed them I'll put my indicator on the other way and cut straight across in front of them back into the inside lane.

Some people occasionally pull over after doing that, but most just sit in the middle lane oblivious to what I've just done.
