undertaking

I see a Volvo caning it up behind me in my rear view mirror so I indicate to pull over so he can get past. The next thing I know I'm almost pulling into the idiot in the Volvo as he flies past me on the left doing over a ton.

Just a quick question, Say for example you pulled in to the left and the volvo was travelling so fast that it goes into the back of you, Whose fault would this be?
I have never thought of it before.

the best is undertaking people who are sitting in the outside lane from the inside lane - it amazes me that people will just sit in a lane oblivious to the queue of traffic behind them, and that the queue will just sit there!

Have to say people sitting in the outside lane going slow are a lot more dangerous than those in the middle lane, a few weeks ago late at night I was doing about 115 down the M1, I was in the outside lane after just overtaking a car, I stayed in it for a bit as there were no cars behind me, I kept checking my mirrors and it is quite scary changing lanes in my car at that speed, bit further up the road a car just appears in front of me who was going at 70 in the outside lane, I just kept flashing and beeping while braking, thank god he moved, otherwise I wouldn't of been able to slow down in time.

Sounds like you were being more dangerous than him if you couldnt brake in time to avoid hitting someone doing the speed limit.

He should not of been in that lane, if I broke harder I would have been able to slow down enough but the way I was braking was slowing me down steadily

So let me get this right:

1) You stayed in the outside lane because there were no other cars behind you? How does that differ from what the other bloke was doing?

I was doing 100 on the M6 Toll at the weekend (in the inside lane because it's such a great / quiet road) when an XKR blitzed past me like I was standing still. I never saw him until he was there because of the speed difference and because he was masked by other traffic and the curve of the road. If I'd checked my mirror a fraction later I would have seen him, but the timings didn't work like that.

Similarly this guy probably wasn't expecting you to be doing 45mph more than him and so didn't realise you'd be upon him so quickly. From his perspective there may have been no-one behind him.

2) I speed, but 70 in the outside lane isn't slow.

Probably, but it's also the law so it shouldn't be unexpected in anyway.
True, and I don't get overly annoyed if someone is doing 70 in the outside lane for that reason. But if I am in the outside lane doing 70, I am aware that I am going relatively slowly and should get out of the way in a timely fashion.

Undertaking isn't breaking the law, it's frowned upon, and can lead to a prosecution under careless/dangerous driving, but in of itself it's not illegal. Indeed, when carried out in a safe manner, undertaking is considered an acceptable resolution to a problem.

Because I don't think you'll believe me.....

About half way down the page is the important bit.
I stand corrected said the man in orthopedic shoes :)

In that case, I'll just undertake!
